That little box of Maglights are all knackered and need work I have a 2 x AA that I’ve upgraded with a drop in but I seem to have miss-laid my smaller working Maglights I need a tidy up!
The place to look for mods to the Maglite is candle power forums.
Zed, any joy with this ? unfortunately, (for me) you've gotten me thinking which is never a good thing. for the 2/3 cell D lights the dropins seem to be pretty much the same price as those you need to mess with / solder / make fit. Going by amazon, starting at a tenner for a cree and gets more expensive for I assume are more spohisticated / better / whatever bulbs.damn you MTo, damn you, i am now forever cursed to want stuff i don't need.

I have a vintage 4D that I installed an LED replacement "bulb" into many years ago. 140 lumens if I remember correctly. While nothing by today's standards, it is surprisingly bright. The focus still works, from wide flood to small spot. Battery life is silly. I don't use it much, but last time I looked, the copper top batteries had a best before date in 2013. Yes, I check them regularly for leakage.
I'm in the same position and that is exactly what I'm planning on doing! There are D sized holders that will take 2 AA batteries. The light won't have nearly the weight, but it's not every day one needs to break bones with a Maglite. Only once in 30 years actually...
There is one guy on CPF that sells a drop in for a mag lite. It's very straight forward and turns your light into a eye burner. If you want details on who let me know. I'd be happy to help ya out.
