If it is only light patches of rust use cooking oil and a rag and a fair bit of effort, if it is more than that then wire wool (but gently) but cooking oil first as it softens the abrasive effect somewhat  :tu:

I have cleaned rusty wok’s by getting them very hot, adding cooking oil wiping them clean with kitchen paper
Might work with cast?

Take potato, and split it. Add table salt to rusty spot, and start rubbing it with potato. Once finished, wipe with hig smoke point oil or lard, and season it.

Good oil is sunseed oil...

Edit. Youtube there is guy called culinary fanatic, whom gives great tips on cast iron.

ok, well, i done the lid - dremel with flap wheels and a 4" grinder with a sanding pad. I decided i'd strip it and redo it totally. I did try the potato and salt, i think it'd work for very light surface rust but mine hadn't been used in a couple years and once I had a proper look at it i figured i'd save myself a lot of messing in the long run by reseasoning it.
So, lid is sanded, washed and drying on my range. Soon i'll let it cool and then apply some sunflower oil and bake it for an hour or two. I'll get before and after pics.

ok, for anyone interested, a quick update - i didn't take any pictures of the lid before i sanded it -

after sanding

after the first seasoning

i will get before, after and seasoning pics of the pot itself, it'll be a few days i used my sanding pads etc on the lid and need to get new ones.

Looking good.  Now cook some bacon in it just to nibble on and to add some extra fat into this beauty.  Then make a "campfire" chile with meat and a cornbread topping.

Step one, build a fire.  Use char cloth ( anyone can use a lighter ) and your Moras to process wood.

Step two, find a recipe you like. There are so many to choose from.

Step three, get out your Whisperlite and make a pot of coffee or tea.

Step four, Use your Opinel to cut up all the ingredients.

Step five, Sit back and enjoy with hot cup of coffee or tea.

I take 3 car camping with me, 2 pans and one deeper pan (4").  I love them especially when we camp in the winter.  The heat stay with the pan and keep our food warm.
This was a while back but man what memories.
