Found an oldie but goodie today
« on: September 02, 2008, 09:51:18 pm »
I found a brand new in box original Gerber Multi-Plier today under a healthy layer of dust at a local TV repair shop.

Everything was in the box, instructions, sheath, and  bit kit. Other than a Gerber MPT I have never handled on of their early tools. I have to say I like thing.
I like the big sturdy blunt nose pliers and how they slide all the way into the handles when closed. After some time playing with it I can see how it got a reputation for being a palm pincher.

It nice to pick up a the bit kit that fits the early Gerber phillips driver as well.

i used to have just like that, when i was in army, and it is the only good gerber ive ever tried and used, the second was suspension, and after that ive been scared of anything with brand Gerber on it :D

i envy your tool, honestly, its very nice, with original box and all.

I have one (without box and kit) and I really like it.  :)

Great to carry this side of the pond as it doesn't lock.
I'm back!!

I know nothing about Gerber at all - how old would that be Prime? Looks to be pristine.

I'd have to say that this multi-plier is brand new and never used. Who knows how long it's been sitting around the TV repair store. According to Bobs posts in the Gerber ID thread It's a fifth generation Multi-plier.

Only two of those pliers are opened, and only slightly!

Hey, congrats on a nice old find there Prime!  Wow, complete with a tool kit and a mint box. That is sweet!

Say, here is a question for you; how does one go about disassembling one of these 5th series Gerbers? I want to remove the plier head from mine and give it a good cleaning. I'm guessing the little round slider button must have to line up with the little hole in the slot track.....but how to unscrew the big round slider??

I don't see how the big round slider head could be removed short of drilling it out and replacing it with a new type screw.
Here is a  pic of the the bottom of the big slider

The little round head slider seems to be part of the whole plier head.

Yeh that's what I'm thinking too.  A rather complex casting if you think about it. Oh well, I'll just have to resist the tear-apart temptation. ;)

Hey by the way, great pictures! 8)

I was looking over the sheath that came with the Multi-plier and couldn't figure out why it had a button snap and and folded out. Looking it over some more I realized what the inner section is for.

It's to hold the bit adapter and extra bits. Talk about a well thought out design.

Pretty cool. 8)
