Anyone use charcloth with a burning glass? In good sun it will ignite almost as soon as you get a focus. I keep a lens in my charcloth tins...padded by a scrap of cloth on the bottom and charcloth on top. A SAK lens works too if you have one.

I've had trouble with charred punk because the surfaces end up so smooth and the sparks bounce off. It is better if broken up a bit and the more traditional method of lighting used...left in the tin and sparks cast into it.
That's how I do it. Then I set the birds nest or feather stick in the tin and watch it burst into flame.

Thanks for ^^^ this.  I wasn't really sure how I was gonna go about getting the punk wood going.

I got better results using cotton rope, works just as well for the intended purpose but it's a bit stronger and easier to handle in general.
I used an old shoe polish tin.

Cloth on the left, rope on the right.  You might need better aim to get the rope going, but I didn't find that to be a problem.

100% cotton cord is somewhat hard to find around here...they always seem to have some synthetic content. It's easier and cheaper to find a 100% cotton mop head. You can find them in Dollar stores...for a dollar  :D The yarn can be braided up to fit any tinder tube snugly or charred.

I tend to use punk wood in a tin.  I then transfer the spark to a cramp ball.  Close the lid on the tin and the charred punk wood is good for another day.  Nice looking steel you have there Spork.

I burnt a tea towel by placing it too close to a gas burner on the stove, so thought I'd have a go at turning it into char cloth. Should have taken pics of the results!
