The sickness has spread...commence the mods
on: April 08, 2016, 10:08:22 AM
It's time to start a new chapter...Modding. This is an area that I am very familiar with in many other fields that have absolutely nothing to do with SAK's (or any other type of knife, edc, or multitool for that matter). If you haven't noticed, my name is customfabfoodie. I do a lot of custom fab and I love to cook and EAT!!!  Even better, I love to eat food that I prepare on cookers that I have made (bbq smokers and high output mobile wok stations mostly). I have the tools, ability, desire, and now the passion to tackle my own "SAK Mod". I'm certain this is the first of probably numerous to come ( I mean that in every sense). This truly is a sickness for me. I have purchased over thirty of these beautiful creations within the last 4 weeks, but I have yet found the "ONE" that meets all my needs. I have came close, but no cigar just yet. I have been told this is an ongoing issue with all SAK enthusiasts. I am now a victim. My only option my dear friends is to mod. Mod like there is no tomorrow, and this is only the beginning. My first choice was one of very simple design and actually very useful for me. Unlike many other (most) SAK users, I happen to love the nail file.  I find this tool extremely handy for me, and one that I nearly can't do without. My form of steady income comes by way of casino gaming. Not by gambling, but by dealing. I am a baccarat/dice/roulette dealer for Bellagio here in Las Vegas, NV. I take a lot of pride in my appearance, and a nail file is one tool that helps me accomplish that. I currently edc a Wenger Traveler which is an 85mm, three layer knife with the exact same tools as a 91mm Vic Climber, except the Climber does NOT have a nail file. I love the Climber. I would love it even more with a file. After numerous hours of research I realized my hopes for a 91mm SAK with a nail file will fall short, even dead in the water. They don't make 91mm SAK's with nail files...WHY NOT???? Necessity is the mother of all invention. Hence, my mod. The 91mm Climber with nail file. Simple and effective for what I want and need. I have plenty 84mm Sak's and 85mm Wengers with nail files...I want a 91mm SAK, and I want it now. Just for sh*ts and giggles, I custom made a set of 3/16" aluminum scales to show it off proud. I wasn't planning on the scales, but I thought "what the hell, why not". I'll post pics of progress. I'm certain there will be others. This is my mod.

Another set of pics...Scales are not finished, just roughed out. I have a few ideas that I'm gonna sleep on before finalizing. Tomorrow is another day.

Here's a few pics of my cookers that recently finished up. The smoker was 30 gallon Craftsman air compressor. The Wok cooker is total custom. They are both wonderful.

Thanks everyone :)! Here are a few more pics of me peening and replacing the brass pivot. I think she turned out pretty darn nice. The small hole that is right above the corkscrew is where I am installing a spring pin/dowel to stop the nail file from recessing too far down. The small blade that was originally on the knife has approximately 1mm more of material on the bottom edge that contacts the spring. The hole was drilled through the outer aluminum liner and through the thickness of the keyring spacer. This will give the dowel/spring pin support on both ends. I'm pretty confident it will work well. Any and all pointers are much appreciated!

You can also get a nail file to work on a 91 by grinding a bit of the heal of the nail file to point it up more, and then give the spring a bit of a bend to restore the snap.  Thats the way Ive been doing it.

Okay, I got her together today. Kind of lost direction on what I wanted to do with the scales, so I gave them a 2 hour stonewash with some small river rock and then a quick scrub with some fine steel wool. They turned out very nice and extremely smooth. Amazing how dark the stonewashing made them. The steel wool give them sort of a "worn in look". Press fit was perfect and no epoxy or glue used for assembly. The spring pin worked like a charm. Maybe I'll get around to adding some design or inlay to the scales, but for now, they're good enough.

Another set of final assembly..It look kind of bland to me. I will definitely add some much needed design characteristics soon.:)

Thank you! No cross, no shield, and no imagination. I kind of feel inadequate. I need to do better. I have an idea that involves a ball mill...I think maybe that will make me smile more than a plain finish.
