Paracord zipper pull & lanyard knot guide
on: April 16, 2016, 01:08:11 PM

I bought some Maxpedition pouches about a year ago, and I'm very happy with them.
The zipper-pulls were a bit loose, so after playing with the cords, I came up with this knot.
I've been using it for all sorts of things, so I thought I'd post a little guide for it.
No idea what the knot is called, though I'm sure others have come up with it.

It's quick and easy to tie. Because the two ends meet at an angle, the cord creates a loop, making it easy to put a finger through it and open a zip. It is also quite tight. Pulling it does not loosen it.

Step 1
Make a squiggly with one end.

Step 2
Rest the other end in the squiggly.

Step 3
Bring the other end around the knot.

Step 4
Pull the end through the big loop, and the little loop above it.

Step 5
Tighten.

Double knot

After the first knot, you will end up with two free ends and a loop.

Twist the loop so that one end is in front of the other.

Twist the loop again so that the other end is in front of one free end.

Pull that end through the loop.

Pull the other end through the opposite loop.

Pull the first end through the loop that the other end created.

Tighten.

You can continue tying knot upon knot, to make a straight zipper-pull or lanyard, instead of a loop.

That's it, I guess. If you happen to know the knot's name, do tell.  :salute:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendship_knot

The Friendship knot is a decorative knot which is used to tie neckerchieves, lanyards and in Chinese knotting.

History and use

This is one of the eleven basic knots of traditional Chinese knotting,[1] a craft which began in the Tang and Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) in China. The Chinese and Japanese names for this knot are based on the shape of the ideogram for the number ten, which is in the shape of a cross that appears on one face (and a square on the other face).[2] The Ashley Book of Knots, first published in 1944, says: "A decorative Chinese Loop. This is commonly employed as a Lanyard Knot. It is handsome and secure."[3] In recent years, it has become popular with members of the Scout and Guide movements for tying their neckerchieves instead of using a woggle.[4]

My knot is handsome and secure!  :tu:
