Bringing and old Leatherman sheath back to life
on: April 30, 2016, 05:32:12 PM
I bought this OG Supertool sheath a little while back and from the pictures I new it was going to be soft and floppy. When it arrived it was smooshed flat in an envelope and wouldn't hold it's shape at all. After poking around the internet for a way to stiffen the leather I read about using paraffin wax.

With the tool in the sheath to hold its shape I heated the leather up with a hair dryer and rubbed and old candle into the leather. The leather soaked up the wax like a sponge. I then stuck it in the freezer to cool it so it would retain the shape. It took a couple of applications to get it to stiffen up but now it's like new again and holds it shape. It also shined the leather up nicely.

After

OK that is awesome Steve :tu:

Just some wax a little heat and then a cool down :o So simple but I never would have thought about doing it that way

Yes, I was skeptical that it was going to work because the sheath was like a noodle.  It w3as a pleasant surprise that it worked so well.  :tu:

What will happen during the heat of summer?

Will the wax melt? Will the leather become soft again.

Keep us informed.

My guess is as long as it's not in full sun it will be fine. And as long as the tool is inside it would retain it's shape when it cooled down. The meting point for candle wax is about 130 F

I guess if the sheath on your belt is at 130F you have bigger problems then a flat sheath.

Just explain to her that you're going to melt candle wax on your head,so your head has a good shine and that shine will last until your head heats to 130 degrees.LOL

Awesome sheath restoration. Besides candle wax, something like Ballistol lube is also a good leather restorative.  I'm not real fond of the smell, though.

I keep a shaved head too. I should probably get rid of it as it takes up a lot of space in the freezer.

Wow that's pretty awesome, I would've never thought about trying that. I've learned so much about MTs since I stumbled on to this site! Good info here and a friendly atmosphere.

Yes, that hit my brain after I posted about Ballistol.  Candle wax for restoring the sheath's structural integrity was brilliant.
