Old File New File Question

Quote
Fine and coarse sides have been reversed: Nail-nick side: Fine side on the old, coarse on the new. Other side: Coarse on old file, fine on the new.

True or false?

True...

The nail nick side seems more coarse on the new one but I can barely tell the difference....both are fairly aggressive.

So that means the file on my custom Hungry Ranfer is the old style.... its pretty aggressive already. Your telling me the new file is even more agressive? Impressive

I only have the gen 2 (1975?-1990?) and gen 3 (1990?-2005?) within reach at the moment, both nail nick fine sided.

Have they changed it for gen 4 (2005?-now) and why?

What's the deal?

Aye yeah I could bug him or a few others here.
Could even walk down the back and take a look myself.
Just thought it would be quicker to ask here given that it is the most popular and frequented board.
However, aside from your good self, it would appear that nobody else has the newer file.
Well that or they just don't give a smurf.

I did pick up my Troubleshooter mod with the new file this morning so could have told you, except I decided not to put it in my pocket.

I'll have a look tonight.

Looked at my Mountaineer, and.....I'm reversing myself. Both sides feel virtually the same but the nick side appears (in the sunlight) to have "teeth" that are infinitesimally closer together....so the orig statement would be false (today at 7:53 CST)

He's right (this time around ;) ) - the nail nick side is finer than the other. They're both double-cut files, but the nail nick side has teeth that are closer together.

yes, on the older file. The new file is reversed.

They're both double-cut files, but the nail nick side has teeth that are closer together.
The old file is double cut, and you can see that very clearly. There are cuts going both / and \
and the ridges in between are all equal in size. It's perfectly symmetrical.

The new file is, for lack of a better word, weird. It is single-cut, but it does not stop there.
There are definite cuts going to one direction, which gives the impression of a single-cut file.
However, there is a second cut, towards the other direction, and it does create a double-cut file, but the second cut is so thin, it makes people wonder what they're looking at.

Is this a double-cut file? Well, it's not a single cut, so we might as well call it double.

Also, how many files are there? It seems that every other person has a different one.
This seems to be complicating things.

My SwissChamp has a stainless steel file, and is nail-nick rough sided.

The cut grooves are closer together.

Both sides feel rough (esp compared to the older files)  but the nail nick side feels less rough....so I guess it's the "fine" side.

Stock SwissChamp, purchased S/H last year.  Has the newest magnifier with clear frame and glass lens, so 2013 or later.
Nail nick side:

Reverse:

Looking down at the spine.  Nail nick side on top.

The nail nick side's teeth are clearly closer spaced.

FWIW, I have 8 SAKs with this same file design: Craftsman, XLT, SwissChamp and five mods (all with files taken from more recent knives).
