My Dad (I envy him) will be doing a guided hiking tour across the Alps with 3 friends of his.

They will be sleeping in small shelter cabins, food and sleeping gear gets hauled from destination to destination.
The people taking part need to carry their daypacks with food/water for teh day, clothes for changing weather etc. weight limit is 8 kg.
My dad decided on the Vic Ranger as this contains most basic tools he might need and includes all he needs for nail / blister care.

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Ranger

I would like to surprise him with a Wenger with teh same loadout as it is a nice bit smaller and lighter.
AFAIK there is no Wenger with the exact loadout.

So I traded an older Champ (?) which will loose some layers.

Now I will need help with a few bits.

I am looking for new/used good condition scales and a Wenger Toothpick

I want the Vic Can opener in the Knifew (for Phillips screws)

I´d like a Vic Awl in there, too.

I will need help getting the beast together, working properly.

Pics will follow, need to upload them first.

I would recommend getting hold of a delmont collection knife, it has the Vic can opener, I'd also use its scales and T&T, but I suppose that is a matter of taste (I prefer the functionality of the Vic T&T).

They also have the awl

Awl in one convenient package, and awl with out having to grind to make parts fit.

That would be my favourite modus operandi, too. But with funds tight and an old Wenger donor already in my posession, I will have to make do with what I have.

The 84 mm Vic can opener seems to fit fien except itr will need to be drilled out (bigger pivot on teh Wenger).
The 91 fits the pivot, but will stick out very much.

On a sidenote: Maybe an 84 mm Can opener could have saved me some hassle in my Böker Tech Tool mod. Will have to investigate that more deeply.

But thank you for your - valid and appreciated - remarks.

Ive got a few of those parts hanging around. I can include them in the package I am (eventually ::)) going to send you.

I definitely have an 91mm awl. Did you want a 91mm can opener? It wasnt clear.

Do you need any bushings, or pin stock?

Thank you very much!

I already have a Vic Awl and a can opener from a 91 and an 84 to test. I could need another can opener from an 84 m Vic for the Böker mod, but thats another story. I already did some pics but need to find some time to resize, upload and post them here. This will show betetr where io am at at the moment.

I wanted to reuse the Wenger Pins, but they were all bent and i think I´ll have to make new ones. I do have Pin stock but could do with some bushings for 2,5 mm pin stock, I think. Although teh Wenger had no bushings to begin with.

A few pics from the starting stage.

The Donor.

The layers that need to go:

What I want to keep:

What I would like to exchange:

Note that this is a 91 mm can opener. This won´t fit. A 84 mm Vic can opener is a drop in fit with the pivot opened up to 2,5 m.

pins filed flat and centrepunched

drilled and ready to be punched out

First test-assembly on a quickly made jig.

I drilled holes in a piece of birch I had lying around and used bicycle spokes to assemble the layers. As they are thinner than the pins, assembly is easy and you can test the layer order and fitting of parts.

Test of the modded opener layer.

Pre-drilling of the can opener.

I am late with pics. I did complete the assemply and already re-peened the knife already. Now looking for spare scales and scale tools. I´ll upload more pics soon!

Thanks. I hope my Peening will work out as solid.

I like the outcome pretty much and it is substantially less knife in the pocket than a 5 layer Vic. I need to have a look if I can find a Ranger for comparison pics.
