West Marine Fisherman's tool
on: May 13, 2016, 10:29:32 PM
I'm looking to build an article on it in the Multitool Encyclopedia. Anyone have one, or even any pictures or information about it? I'm not reffering to the Sailing tool, or the Blacktip, but the recalled Fisherman's Tool with the replaceable cutters. I've tried searching both Google and the forum, but the vague name is not doing me any favors :/.

I still haven't figured out if it was recalled before it hit the shelves, or if it never made it to an actual store. I just know there were problems with the replaceable wirecutters.

Thanks!

Where did you get that info from? I believe the first gen BlackTip had the replaceable cutters and was recalled. I could be wrong though.

That one sounds right.

Honestly I was just recalling from memory. I have no clue how accurate any of that info is. I just know there was a replacable cutter fisherman's tool for West Marine, that was recalled at one point, and would like more info on it.

The first Gen thing would explain the full name of the BlackTip though. The BlackTip Fisherman's II Multi-Tool. I think ive seen a picture of it (promotional material maybe?) But have had no luck finding it.

On a related note, is the BlackTip and Sailing Tool discontinued? They are not on the West Marine site anymore.

I have both versions of the BlackTip ( with and without the replaceble cutters, and the one with was VERY hard to find).

What did you want to know that I can tell from looking at the actual tool ?

Differences between both would be nice, and some pics of the rare one (especially the cutters)

I just checked, the only difference I could see was the replaceable wire cutters in the pliers, and you can see how much less metal there is in the pliers because of them. I vaguely remember the reason for the recall was because the pliers broke there under hard use. The pliers are so long they have a lot of leverage, and that combined with the extra force allowed by the SOG gearing was apparently too much for the lesser amount of metal left around the wire cutters.

Everything else (handles, tool locks, components, sheath) appear to be identical.

Here is a link to a thread started by J-sews with lots of info and photos about the BlackTip:

Here is a post by WH867 with a photo of a BlackTip with replaceable cutters:

Anything else ?
