It's the pouch for sure. Took me a second watch through to spot it. I was waiting for him to use the knife.

Yeah that's a rescue tool pouch but I wonder if he has something more useful for fishing inside it.

It would make sense if he had another SAK or other tool in the sheath (I carry mostly Leathermans or a Buck 110 in the OD Molle sheath I bought for the Soldier '08, which I ended up only pocket carrying), but I don't see why a fisherman would carry a tool intended for firefighters, police, and paramedics.   Pretty much every other 111mm would fit most people's needs better than it.

I love the fish in these shows, but they NEVER show enough of the gear.

There's a moment in the episode where they have to raft upon an icy river and the guy above asks if everyone on board has a knife, in case they fall into the deadly waters, to cut off boots or other stuff that could drag them down. Perhaps in this context carrying a rescue tool may make sense.
