Birthday Hatchet
on: May 23, 2016, 04:24:00 PM
Hi Everybody

I watched a youtube video the other day where a claw hammer is forged into a hatchet.

My cousin gave me a claw hammer head, the fiber glass handle snapped off.  Plan was to maybe use it as a cut-off tool or something, so I got rid of the claws with a grinder leaving the solid piece.

Since my cousin is turning 40 this year, I got the idea to forge his discard hammer into a pretty little hatchet for him.

I'll post some pics of the hammer now and update the thread over the coming months.

Stay tuned  :D

Hope to light the fire and start hammering on Saturday.
The birthday is only end of November, but I find myself not wanting to do the other things left to be done

Hi Gareth

Sorry, forge stayed cold this weekend while I finished the little puukku.

I did however score an old round file, so definitely next weekend  :salute:

I need to make wedge to open the hole or keep it open, but so far so good.

The spike is coming along nicely, the head is about 30-40% to where it needs to be.

I was planning on doing some more forging on Saturday, but I realised there are too many other projects like the other 14C28 knife, that one is for my dad and his 70th birthday is in about 10 days.....

Hi Gareth

It's one session further along, I'll need to fire up the forge once more for a bit of work on the spike and some general straightening, then the grinding can begin.

Fortunately the birthday is only end of November

Fortunately the birthday is only end of November

Life hey?

I know some of you might find this hard to believe, but I'm having a very hard time finding a stump to mount my anvil on....

I was given a one, top had been chopped but the bottom end was still firmly attached to......roots.

I've had 3 sessions with every saw I have or could borrow, and the only result so far is a smurfed rotator cuff muscle it seems....

At first I thought it was extremely cool that the tree bleeds red, but it turns out the red, sugary sap just binds up everything.  Almsot a whole can of WD40 didn't help much from the 2nd session on.

I'll need to rent a chainsaw at some stage.......

Long story short - smurfed shoulder, unmounted anvil that will further smurf the shoulder, so the Birthday Hatchet will be replaced by a hunting knife made from a Nicholson file with brown, black and white micarta.
Blade has been profiled and micarta made.

The hatchet will definitely be finished at some stage, most likely during my december "holiday"

Thanks everybody  :salute:

I went for a sonar which was inconclusive, GP referred me to a speSmurfpillst with an excess payment I couldn't (read: refused to) afford.
Went a previous generation GP who felt around a bit, stuck a needle in and informed me if it doesn't get better I need to go to above mentioned speSmurfpillst anyway....

So far so good, but not black-smithing or mosquito swatting for now

Considering the intended recipient I can't share the process on FB, so I'll make a new thread in the relevant section.

I will tell you this, the micarta looks stunning......BUT

Temperature has a huge effect on the process, and it is smurf-hot here right now.  While making the micarta my first batch of polyester resin went to goop about halfway through.
I dumped it out and mixed up a new batch, as had happened before there were some blobs from the previous batch mixed in......never caused problems before.
This time round it set so quickly the blobs of resin are visible and it actually warped the whole slab because it was under pressure.

I said it was hot.....by 9am yesterday it was 35C, last night at 11pm when I got into bed it was still 26C.

Need to halve the amount of hardner I add at a guess.

More in a new thread, will update this one when the hatchet is done.

.....wish I had a cousin that made knives
