Despite having a bug I do have some solar burgers cooking with a red potato & red onions, with some salsa over each burger. Looks to be done but decided to err on caution and cook them a bit more after repositioning the solar over & its reflectors.

Diced some red onions. Tried frozen bell pepper but it wasn't working out, so just used onions. Next time will get fresh bell peppers. Kneaded hamburger and onion together in four small round solar burger shapes. :D Placed in 4 spot along the tray. Washed a red potato, diced, and laid pieces in between burgers. Put left over red onion over the top of these. Added a friend's spicy salsa over the top of the burgers.

Got stove out, legs folded out, and ready to go cook outdoors, by solar power.

Checking placement of unit perpendicular to sun. Inserted tray while making adjustments.

Was a hair over 100°F here in this part of Idaho.

Back side of GoSun solar cooker

  Tray inserted

  Cooking commencing ... :D

Checked after 40 minutes, probably was plenty cooked - but I went another 15 minutes

Pulled tray out, was steamy hot. Paid it on a bench. Got the GoSun out of the sunlight and let the moisture drain out of the tube. The metal thing underneath is a peddler that I keep outside for exercising.

Took photos of the very good smelling food...

Letting the GoSun cool down. Set it inside the back of the house were it was warmer with no air conditioning to give the tube thermal shock.

Set the tray on the stove top, and the air conditioner was cooling the house down. Was 110° F today. Put food on a paper plate, carried it over to the desk, put a meat thermometer in a solar cooked burger. and was 130° F after it had some time too cool down.

So, how good was it? :o

I ate the entire thing!

Already contemplating lemon pepper, rosemary, and olive oil basted chicken for tomorrow.

Tried an evening sun test for hot dogs. It cooked them, the two near the end had split open. Anyone can cook hotdogs though, so no photos of them being plump and split.

  Thanks.  :D

See that GoSun has another kickstarter of sorts, this time for a portable hotdog cooker. Can get one for like $60 ... it's cute, even though it can cook a taquito, sausage, veggie dog, blintze, tots, nuggets or other foods of similar sizes. Still... $60??  :ahhh

Muffin test. 1st up was Betty Crocker blueberry, added 1/2 cup of milk.

Waited 45 to 50 minutes and they came out good. The muffins only reach the edge of the tray, and had lined using aluminum. Sprayed Pam cooking spray on the aluminum foil but the muffins still stuck. Seemed to have misplaced the baking spray so was using olive oil instead.

Next was the Betty Crocker Banana Nut muffin mix. Was thinking it would of been the same effect, right? WRONG! Most of the mix raised to the width of the tube. The trailing end end was the Bluberry muffin mix which merged into the Banana Nut mixture. :ahhh Only difference was I used 1/2 H2O instead of milk. Oh, and I sprayed the stainless steel tray instead of using aluminum foil. Made a difference me thinks, though means more cleaning of the tray.

Ended up cleaning the Go Sun Sport with the included scrubber before putting the remaining mix in. And I thiiiiined it out this time!

Tried chicken tonight, after baking 3 trays of muffins, with breaks in between. Didn't want to stress the glass vacuum tube too much.

Rosemary (semi-crushed), Lemon Pepper, Olive Oil basted chicken for tonight's planned dinner, with diced carrots - which got interrupted by a female cougar that wanted to sink her claws into me.

About 25 minutes into cooking a huge cloud came in and covered the sun up. Then when the sun came back out had to relocate the GoSun Sport to the other side of the house. Took about 45 to 55 minutes to cook.

And I'm one of those types that has to be sure of the cooking, so did a thorough check of the meat using a Vic manager.

Went and attended a church social, where I met up with the younger cougar after. She didn't feel like chicken, so shared some with the pastor before hitting up a local Chinese buffet. A few hours driving, and got home. Took the GoSun Sport out and the chicken was still slightly warm. Had chicken for an after dinner snack.

You know, this cooks enough to help me proportionize the meals for weight loss, and baked or steamed food is better than fried. Have a little bit of hamburger left over. Might cook that and a white potato before heading off to work tomorrow. :D

PS: I burnt myself on the tray making muffins. Can definitely say this solar oven idea works!

One could purchase these solar vacuum tubes off Ebay, make their own housing and rotator, to make their own solar cooker for less than the GoSun Sport. How well they cook depends upon the crafter & the design.

The GoSun Sport is a clever, light weight idea. That's probably where they excel. Other home built solar ovens are much heavier and the reflectors leave a lot to be desired. And if a tube breaks during the 5 year warranty GoSun can send you another. That there makes up for the cost if it's ever needed.

Comes with a scrubber that attaches to the end of he tray. It's easy, soap, warm water, slide it in and out. Rinse, repeat.

When the muffins swelled up against the tube I rotated the tray in and out and found that it sort of pulls excess out too, like wet crumbs. It's really easy to clean. Letting it cool down though can take a while. Even after 30 minutes I thrust a scrubby in there with plain hot water and I seen steam being created.

I see. I bet it's better to clean it while residues are still fresh. You know, right after eating. Should be the best practice when camping, with hot water not easily available.

The price is quite high but I wonder if this GoSun could be used regularly and pay back in electricity bill savings.

Going to wash mine right now. :)

  Back, with photos.

Looking down the tube: Finished cooking chicken about 7:15 PM, started at 6:12 PM I think. Let chicken cook for another 15 minutes while I got my clothes changed. Put in back of car, went to church social. Shared chicken with pastor around 8:30PM. Went out in a date, got back about 12:30AM. Finished up chicken, was still warm. 4AM cleaned the GoSun in about 5 minutes.
Used Simple Green dish soap, GoSun Tray Scrubby. Washed twice with scrubby, rinsed 3 times. Perty basic.

  Before:

  First dish-washing liquid soap bath:

  First rinse:

  Done

Only had mine under a week. It's summer hear and I live in a trailer. Cooking with a stove is almost certain meltdown. :ahhh This is supposed to cook even down to 20° F/-6.67° C. Can take it almost anywhere, doesn't weigh much. The outer tube isn't hot at all. You can smell the food cooking.

It probably does not need cleaned as much as you might think. It will still bake even if it's black inside, cause it's the outer area of the inner tube that conducts the heat, and the vacuum between the tubes is the insulator. But if you don't want your chicken tasting like banana nut muffins a cleaning would be advisable.
You could really just wash the tube out with a 1/2 a cup of water, using nothing but the scrubber, then rinse. Cook away till stuff starts sticking and leaving taste trails, then use some soap.  :twak:

Oh no, I'd rather not do it this way. First because it will be harder to remove the insalubrious, encrusted grime then and because insects will find said grime interesting, both of which I'd much prefer to avoid   ;)

I guess using sand isn't advisable?

Since the tube is made of glass, and not knowing how thick the glass is, probably not a good idea to use sand. Some have used a dowel with a screwed on flip-flop sponge off center, others a microfiber cloth.

GoSun probably made the tube scrubber option to use the tray for minimalist use without requiring a cleaning rod. Now one could use a round scrubber brush and adapt some sort of long handle on it, a few tablespoons of water, and then use a microfiber scrubber-thing and be okay.

Or, if your Cap't Jack Sparrow, send a crab down the tube to clean it out. If the crab does something inside the tube at least it will taste like seafood. :o

• Tubes cost $10 to $25 off Ebay, probably depending upon quantity and shipping.
• Make your own set of reflectors, and a lot of MTO's know about polishing metals - me I've not figured out how to do it very well. Personal past attempts at polishing a multitool came out rough, but polished. Nothing like the pros here. So you could probably make something durable for around $60, or cheaply for less.
• Making a tray, or buying one for $80 unless you know a welder/fabricator and have access to metal sheeting.
• Then you need a mounting and some way of directing the reflectors. Dirt, sand, rocks. So that's open on price range
• And a seal. Silicone is cheap, can use something like a ball flapper valve thingy for repairing toilets, PVC tubes, something.

In theory you could make your own cheaper if you have the tools, skills, and materials. You could even go as far as getting a wider solar vacuum tube and make a larger scaled version, but prolly can't take it hiking.

So the theory is a sound one, minus the semi-fragility of pyrex-grade glass, you could make one cheaper - perhaps a larger one. Not everyone has those skills, tools, and abilities.

GoSun is expensive. I've followed GoSun for a few years. Wanted to get in on the Kickstarter but honestly thought there's no way that is going to work! Novel idea. Silly me did not know the solar vacuum tubes were already being used in water heating applications. Could of gotten one much cheaper. Then too, is wise to wait a while for innovation to kick in. The whole evolutionary stuff that takes some companies a wile to get with the program. :twak:

So. ... dumb question here.... it heats up nicely and cooks beautifully in 100+ degree weather and in direct sunlight.... great.

But I also like to eat on cloudy days and sometimes also on rainy days.  I assume on those days you need to order a pizza?

That seems like an imperfect solution if it's that weather dependant, or am I missing something?

As we found out, the BioLite stove I was a fan of turned out to have a serious flaw and I'm wondering if the GoSun does as well.

Experts would have to answer that, an above video shows people cooking on cloudy days. So it takes roughly 5 minutes to reach 500° F/260° C, a cloud comes by, what happens? There's a vacuum in there between the two layers of glass for insulation, along with a metal collector that distributes and holds heat in, and the inside is HOT HOT HOT.
You're asking me how long it will stay relatively high? No idea. Had one in the back of my car, drove 20 minutes to a church social, was there over an hour, another 30 minutes the pastor came by. I opened up the tray and it still was too hot to just barely hold the chicken.
In that amount of time how fast does a Canadian cloud take to cross the sun? And with each passing of the sun it will warm up again. Have heard claims of 650° F/315.6° C. Am guessing that unless the sky was totally blacked out it would cook. Then there are those that say Go Sun will cook on a totally cloudy sky - but may take longer.

As for rainy, I give :twak: :twak: :twak: See above. ::)

How long does it take a cloud to pass the sun?  Sometimes days, sometimes a week or more.

I usually like to eat more than once a week.
