IKEA NiMh LSD battery, AAA leaking/fizzing issue
on: May 30, 2016, 05:18:10 PM
I noticed some black carbon deposits on the +ve pole of two ikea AAA batteries, last time I charged them. These batteries are used in an LED lantern, that may run for over an hour, at times.

I discarded them and started using other, Lidl batteries.

Today, I was charging some other AAA, ikea batteries, used in a different torch, when I heard a fizzing sound. I took the batteries out of the charger and a black liquid was bubbling out of the +ve end of the battery.

I do not know if it is the glue or some internal liquid, but it does look like something has boiled inside

The charger is used regularly and this are the only problems I have had with batteries. These aree the only such problems I have had with any NiMh (LSD) batteries.

The first batteries did not worry me, but there seems to be some problem. I have used various batteries in the lights, so I do not think the lights overheat.

I will bring this to the attention of IKEA (when I remember), but I would advice against using these batteries, or at the least, leaving them unattended to charge.

I have not had any issues with their AA batteries

Stay away from the green LSD   ;)

Can I still use the pink polka-dot ones?

Thanks for the warning dks.  I don't have a local Ikea any more, but we do still head there from time to time.  I'll be very interested to hear what Ikea have to say about this.

I dropped them off at ikea today. They are from the same maker, i was told.

They have my details, and will investigate the issue.

Ikea isn't exactly my first to mind brand for batteries of any type

These days I only buy (and only recommend) eneloops for NiMh rechargeable batteries (the low self-discharge version). High quality, reliable and long lasting batteries.  It also helps to have a decent charger ( I use an MAHA C9000).

I second the MAHA/Powerex charger. I have a MAHA C801D that I have used for my rechargable AA batteries (these are used in flash units both on camera and off camera) for about 10 years now, while I also have a couple other chargers such as a Duracell charger and a Rayovac charger, the MAHA is the one I use most since it will allow me to deep cycle charge (condition) the batteries. The other two chargers have the adapter so I can plug then into the a cars cigarette lighter, which is nice when I traveling and need to recharge batteries, though they dont do the deep cycle charges.
