Awl for the wingman.
on: June 17, 2016, 09:02:25 PM
After the knife project I still had some material left over. This is also very close to the thickness of the inside tools on the wingman.

My first thought on seeing the tiny blade on the wingman's"package opener" was "Well, this thing is right next door to useless!" Time to replace it with the tool that all multi-tools should have and surprisingly few do:

THE AWL!

The inside tools also have 3/16 diameter holes.

As with the knife, I drilled a hole that would give me enough metal on all sides and then marked out the shape of the tool from there.

Now it's back to the big grinder to rough out the shape.

A few hours of filing later it's actually starting to look like something that will fit in the frame.

Speaking of the frame, I put the package opener back in to see how it sat and get an idea for how much room that I had to work with.

After that I used the cutter to mark out about how much material I would have that I could fit in there.

Here is where I got to be a little creative and decide what shape I was going to make the awl and then mark it out.

Next, prick punch and then drill out the eye with the same 5/64 bit that I used for the detent on the blade.

Then grind and file, file and grind. I ended up attaching it to the frame for this part of the grinding and filing just to make it easier to hold.

Lastly, I broke out the needle file set to create relief grooves in either side.

Great work. Just as before.

I agree with you about the awl being a must have on a multi, that is one reason I cannot get behind the Wave  :-\

But the package opener is pretty cool  ;) (yours for sale?)

Well done

Yeah, the wave definitely needs one. Maybe I'll replace that flathead screwdriver with one. It has the bit driver so a second flat head is redundant anyway.

Might be. Tell me though, what is it that I'm missing about the package opener that is so awesome?

Eh, nothing really ;) seems to be a little better/safer at opening retail packages (clamshells) better than a knife... (Oh, also I have a tool with 3 flatheads  :-[ was gonna try to swap one out)

But you are right and awesome modification. Awl>>>package opener

Ohhh... I get that. For some reason I was thinking of cardboard, tape, and staples. Yeah, that would be handy to have, especially over a redundant flathead

Looking good, it's nice to see some work on the Medium Duty LM Lineup.

Have you had an issue with the clip?

You read my mind! That's actually my next mod that I'll be posting.

The clip itself has been fine for me, but why on earth the took a tool laid out for a right handed person and then put the clip on that side is beyond me.

It's fine if I want to carry it in the right side of my back pocket, but if I want to carry it in the front pocket, it keeps rotating until the clip reaching the bottom of the pocket. At that point it's awkwardly sideways and bulging out my pocket.

How about $10...  :tu: pm incoming.

Also, I agree with you on the wingman pocketclip. I just wish all my models had them! But you are right. The mod you mention would definitely improve and should have been what they did from the get-go.
