Camping Badge request
on: June 19, 2016, 05:43:05 AM

Got back from a trip and took some pics sorting out our gear before putting them away. Backpacks first.

Pic1 - My wife's backpacks. The one with behind the rollup pad is her old pack. The rose red pack she uses is 38L. She hates carrying big packs so this is the biggest she would go with. She always goes with me so I carry most of the load.
Pic2 - These are mine. The one behind the rollup pad is my old pack. It looks smaller to the one I carry now (next to it) but it's the same capacity at about 68L. The Osprey has a slimmer, taller profile and the same load feels much lighter. Their Anti Gravity suspension is very nice. I never meant to buy a new pack but once I tried it I had to get it.
Pic 3 - Pack I use for 1-2 nighters without my wife. Usually with friends. It's 48L and I make it work.
Pic 4 - My wife's and mine when we go together. 106L combined. If I were ever to go on a winter trip again this is the pack I would use as well. But I sold most of my winter gear. Getting old and picky :(

Here is what's in the packs. Have not included consumables and personal items.

Pic 1 - My Solo setup gear.
Pic 2 - Me and my wife's combined. We got matching LHS and RHS sleeping bags. We mate them to make one big cosy sleeping bag. We got mating straps for the sleeping pads too. Works out great.
Pic 3 - Most of our car camping gear. We also got a Mr.Heater for the tent when it's cold (not in the pic). That's the nice thing about car camping. Can take anything you want to make you comfortable.

This was about 10 years ago. Grand Canyon National Park. Freezing at the top of the rim and fairly warm at the bottom of the canyon. Had to keep shedding layers as we went along. A very unique experience. Btw, that's me for those who missed my mug shot pic  :D

Great thread mate.  I dropped down from a 65L bag to a 45L bag for my multi-night trips a couple of years ago and don't miss the extra space.  The bag itself weighs a lot less and I can hitch my tent to the outside without it getting in the way.

Nice  :tu: I like the 45L size because you don't have to check it in when flying if you make it look small. There are some smart designs for equipment now. They pack small, multi use and nestle within each other. The only problem is you got to buy them as a set and cannot mix and match.

I have been toying with the idea of an Ultralight setup. From what I have seen you dont have to spend a lot to make it work. Around 10 pounds without food and water. Will have to really rough it out which is putting me off. Especially in the sleeping department.

It's the rough sleeping that puts me off a little as well.  Tent, sleeping bag and a mat go a long way to making a trip comfortable.

This is why I kayak- I don't want to carry all that stuff!  I'd rather let the boat carry it for me!

Seriously though, that is a cool set up. I bought Megan a nice pack last year and I've been thinking of getting one for myself sometime.  I have lots of sling bags, shoulder bags, laptop bags etc, but no normal backpack.

In these parts it's raccoons. Some say they will get on the branch and pull up your bags. I think it's a myth. I add rocks to make them heavy just in case.

Get a backpack fitted correctly and most of the weight will be on your hips. The shoulder straps are just to keep it upright. Then there is the load balancer straps to tip it forward and have the center of gravity on you and not behind you. All these makes the load feel lighter. Pointing these out because getting the correct pack size by torso length is very important if you are to carry a heavy load comfortably.
