Wingman clip switch
on: June 19, 2016, 06:29:52 AM
I was never all that impressed with the add-on pocket clip that they had for the wave. In contrast, I really like the one that they put on the wingman/sidekick tools. Well, except that it's on the wrong side!

I should say that it's great if I want to carry it in my back pocket. However, if I carry it in a front pocket then it will slide down to the base of the pocket and turn itself sideways.

I figured that it would be fairly straightforward to move it to the other side and drill a hole for the peg to fit in.

Turns out it's a little more involved than that, but still not too bad. As you can see when you remove the screw over the pocket clip, the pivot is actually a hex head faster with a threaded hole to retain the clip.

This pivot is going to have to move over to the other side with the clip.

To get the pivot out I had to apply a pretty good amount of pressure to take the load of the spring off.

Note that there are two washers: a thin bronze one for the knife and a thicker steel one for the pliers. These seem like they would be easy to loose.

Then I had to do the same thing on the other side.

Now I reassembled it with the hex pivot on the other side. I found it easiest to line everything up with the torx wrench before trying to fit the pivot in.

Also, I was able to use the clip as a wrench to hold the hex side.

With the hex pivot now in place could mark the spot for the hole for the clip's peg to fit into.

The peg mics out at 7/64, so I'll need at least that size of bit.

The drilling was tough going. I had the drill press on the slowest speed (400 rpm) and o still had to stop several times as the metal got hot.

I also stuffed some folded up chipboard into the middle so that it wouldn't bend and let the drill bit wander so easily

Finally it was done! Well, almost. The clip didn't quite sit right in it's new home.

I used the triangle needle file to create a little more room for the peg. Now it fits great!

Just in case anyone was curious, yes the hex hole in the clip is the right size to fit 1/4" bits.  I'm not sure that this would ever be that useful, but it was interesting to note.

Excellent job! I hate how Leatherman puts the pocket clip on the "wrong" side (for my needs). It drives me nuts.

Very nice! Nothing like getting a good clip setup for pocket carry.

I agree with the Captain about LM pocket clip locations. Never could figure out why it's always the wrong side...

Thanks, y'all. Glad you liked it.

I've often wondered what they were thinking with those clip locations. Besides, it seems like it would have been easy enough to make it switchable by making both sides with the hex pivot.

Unfortunately, Leatherman seem to be scared stupid about anyone tinkering with their tools.

I just carry in the left front side pocket.

Well, that would work to at least alleviate the rotation issue.
