Possible Leatherman Wave Mods
on: June 22, 2016, 07:57:32 PM
I'm planning out my first big modding, and was wondering if anyone has swapped the OG Wave scissors into the new Wave?  I know I will have to work out a locking tab notch, and reverse the order of the tools in the handle, but is there anything too major in doing this that I haven't seen yet?  I think the old style scissors are thinner than the new ones...

If it matters, I also intend to give the new Wave pliers from a Rebar....

Yeah, I had seen the Rebar pliers to Wave mod before.  That's what gave me the idea.  I just like the scissors from the Original Wave so much better than the new ones, so I'd like to swap them.

Can I just ask, I'm about to swap some tools on the wave. First time opening it up.  Anything to be aware of when unscrewing the security pin? What's the washer/spacer situation too? Is it similar like with rebar where one side turns, and not the other, etc?

If I remember correctly, the pivot is the same as the Rebar in that regard.  It's been a bit since I last had a Wave open.

is their little micro washer/spacers in between tools too? And are wave inside tools all interchangeable with rebar tools and vice a versa?

Been a very long time since I have messed with a Wave but I am pretty sure that there are washers between each tool and yes the tools from the Wave and Rebar are interchangeable :tu:

Haven't tried it, but I would bet too long.  The only time I can remember seeing Surge scissors inside a tool was with a ST 300 body.

If we all modded our tools the same, Leatherman could just make it a standard model and charge twice as much for it  :tu:

So if I unscrew the screws on the plier side to swap an outer tool, do I have to worry about the pliers or anything in particular? Easy to swap out the knife?

Sorry so many questions. But is there any step by step mods with pics for the wave  :pok:? There's tons of great ones for the rebar.

All this is from memory, but.....

On the Wave, I believe the screw part of the pivot is on the Blade side.  So, if you want to upgrade a blade, you can just unscrew it, change the tool, and screw it back in, adjusting the tension for what you want.  If you want to change the flie/saw, then the pivot will have to be removed.  It's really not that bad to get everything lined back up.  Just pay attention to where the washers go when you pull it apart!

So I was fiddling around with the wave and taking it apart. I was just looking to swap the saw and file locations, both on the right sides and same (very similar) shape. But it didn't seem to want to work out that easy. The saw and file both pushed in way to far where the nail nick wasn't accessible? So I went to just switch them back and similar issue, and blade play? Even with the screws tightened as tight as could be they now all have play? Used all the washers... original locations...

What did I do wrong? And regarding the washers it just looks like there is 2 per tool correct? 1 directly on both sides of the single item tool, right?

Please send help

As I remember, the washer goes in between the body of the tool and the implement (saw, file, or blade.)  I can try to check tonight to make sure.

There's two washers per tool. So on both sides. Right. But why the blade play and variance? I can't tighten the bolts tighter, but everything's loose?

I know there were a couple threads with people swapping out the outter tools somewhere...  seems someone would have ran into this issue here?

After I get done working on a firearm tonight, I will pull apart my factory Wave and take some pics for you.  I don't remember that many washers, but I've slept since I made my Reaver.  That was the last time I had a Wave apart.

Ok, what I found is that there are three washers, two on the saw/file side, and one on the blade side.  Both of the washers on the saw/file side are between the tool and the handle.  There is not one on the outside of the tool.

This pic shows the order that the things came out.

Interesting I'll try that. Would that be the same with the saw and serrated then? I'd assume so.
