Popular Mechanics Tool Test--MTs.
on: June 23, 2016, 11:32:48 PM
I got the August issue of Popular Mechanics, and they had a Tool Test on multitools. Their choice was the LM Signal, out of three tools--the SOG PowerPlay, Gerber MP600 Bladeless, and the Signal.    I'd have to disagree, picking the Gerber, though the Signal is a great tool in its own right (Heavy Duty Skeletool, in my view, and I do want one of these), it's too expensive for so few tools, the clip/hammer blocks the bit driver, can opener, and awl, and the fire striker doesn't work as well as it should.  It's obvious they didn't actually use any of the tools--i.e. carrying them for a week as a "test drive", which I always do with a new tool.

Some of their reasoning never made sense to me--They said the screwdriver blades are hard to pull out on the Gerber, but I've never had this issue on my MP450.   The SOG's lock release lever dug into the user's hand, which I can't vouch for--I don't own a PowerPlay.

So, what do you guys think of their results?

Out of the three I think my choice would be the MP600.  It's old tech and not as sexy as the fancy newer tools, but it has some serious pedigree, and the MP600 platform is the most successful design in multitool history, having spawned more variants than any other.

But then I don't know what criteria they used- maybe I will have to see if I can find a news stand somewhere and see if I can pick up the issue and look through it.

Kinda weird group of tools to pick from unless it was a "best of multi-tools that came out in the last couple years" competition. I think I would pick the Signal as well. But the Wave, Rebar, and Spirit would have trounced all three of their choices.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

A very random selection of tools.  The writer probably just asked around the office for whatever the other writers had in their pockets at that moment.

Strange choice. I have beaten the HELL out of MP600's, and I know for a fact I'm not the only one. No, the 600 isn't as pretty as either LM. But, they'll take a hard beating and keep on going. They're a bit masochistic like that, if you will........ :)

Any of the main 4 have been time tested and all done very well  I just wished that the three he picked would have been a little more similar ??? :D

you can read their 2009 test here, free:

http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/tools/reviews/a3816/4296698/

"Not all multitools are created equalbut that doesn't stop us from oohing and aahing over every one of them we get our hands on. Once the honeymoon ended with these five beauties, we got down to the serious task of testing their pliers and blades. For each tool, we sampled the scissors by slicing through duct tape, then tested the saw blades by cross-cutting a construction-grade 2 x 4. To put the pliers through their paces, we pulled ½-in. staples from red oak. Then we clamped down on a bicycle brake cable and manually yanked the cord until the spinning wheel came to a stop. Our valiant testers incurred a few scrapes along the way, but the results are in. Here they are, in order from worst to best."

I have seen the article in question, and the differences are not much, one out of 5 stars between the tools.

They only tested 3 tools.

They seem to like the diamond file on the signal.

I can't believe Magazines are still in business.

I don't mean because most consumers are online, but because, y'know, by mass, they are more ad than article, and the articles are crap.

That's just me though, whatever does it for ya.

You'd think so, but Bothans are not the hardiest of species.  I once saw one die from injuries sustained while hiccuping.  And another because his iPhone was backordered.....  :ahhh

I'd have to go with the MP600 PS out of those three. Versatile toolset, and I know how tough it is from experience.

The Signal isn't really for me, though I do appreciate the concept behind it.

The PowerPlay was good in theory, but all the feedback I've seen on the bit driver makes it sound pretty bad.

At first I could not recognize the Signal in that pic. Looks like they took off it's yellow plastic pieces. Probably they thought it look better that way.

D) None of the above.

Its hard to beat the wave if you want an all around good to go Leatherman.  Or go rebar if you need to reduce costs.  The rebar IMO is the best value for money LM currently offers.

I'll always be partial to the swisstool/spirit line but I do mix it up a bit.
