One of the most useful knots, IMO, is the bowline. It is used for lifesaving, camping, gear tying, whatever. Here is my attempt to show you how to tie this useful knot. Pics will follow shortly
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Start with a loop like this. Make sure the loop goes over not under

Then the working end goes up through the hole

Then up and around and back down through the hole.

Pull tight!  Make sure not to cross the paracord

These knots are extremely tight and hard to take apart....unless you know the trick :ahh:

Flip the knot over and pull this little end and it comes right apart :tu:

My dad used to make all his rookies at the Fire Station learn to tie all the required knots (inc the Bowline) behind their back. He said if you could do that, you could tie one in any situation.  :salute:

+1 Robert!  :2tu:

While doing mtn rescue work many, many moons ago, I had to learn to do the bowline one-handed.  As a sailor, I'm teaching people to do this all the time as we use the bowline for many tasks in many different situations.

None of those rookie fireman ever complained after they saw dad do it...after all, if a guy with only 7 fingers could do it, so could they.  :D

I've been told that if I'm going to know any knots, the bowline should be at the top of the list.  It's a knit that comes in handy so many times and I can never remember how to do it when I need one....  :ahhh

You'd think that since I have spent the last 8 years securing cargo to go on vessels that I'd have learned it, but no one uses knots any more- at least not for securing cargo.

Maybe this will be the post that makes me learn it for real!

Wow Grantmeister, for an outdoorsman, learn it...there are other "knits" that will come in handy, but the bowline should be required for anybody adventuring outside.  If I had known/guessed you were bowline-challenged this winter while you were laid-up, I would have sent you some line and a step-by-step tutorial so you could practice...oh well.

Thanks. I think I got it right this time.

@def. this knot is great when used to tie down kayaks when transporting.

Actually I have studied knots on numerous occasions.  I enjoy doing it.  Unfortunately my retention of knot tying information is severely impaired.
