My LM Wave Build
on: July 03, 2016, 06:55:52 PM
My first major mod has been done to a new style Wave.  I doubt any of my mods are new, but it's all new for me!

I started with a Wave and a Rebar.  The Rebar was for donor tools and plier head, so I didn't plan on putting it back together.  This will be important later.

I started with heating the pivot of the Wave with a soldering iron...

...and the pivot came apart pretty easy.  This was repeated on all other pivots.

I started on the side with the small bit driver as I wanted to take the scissors out.  I'm not a fan of the new Wave's scissors.  I tried to swap some scissors from an Original Wave, but decided that it would need to many mods to make that work.  I may tackle that in the future.  Since I usually carry a Micra with me, I decided to totally forgo the scissors and put the awl from the Rebar into the Wave.

Unfortunately, the awl wouldn't just drop in without standing proud.  I started shaping the awl to fit.

I figured out that the notch that acts as a blade lock stop was what was providing the continued interference after relieving the blade shape for clearance.

At this point, I had shaped the awl to such a point that I thought notching out for the stop would weaken it to much, so I took the smaller flat driver from the Rebar, and shaped a new awl from scratch.  I started to put the hole in the awl blade, but the screw bit was walking so much, I decided that I didn't need it.  I mostly use the awl as a scraper anyway.

Next, I took the Wave's flat driver and notched it and filed it to use as a pry bar.

Copying an idea I saw someone else do, I added a notch to the small bit adapter so that it can be locked open at 90°.

I had to test fit everything together so many times, that I decided to make a slave pin to fit all the tools and washers together before sliding in the Wave's pivot.  I figured out the length I needed and just cut a Rebar pivot off with a Dremel.

I also added the 90° notch to the large bit driver on the other side.

I filled in the measurement markings on the handles to make them easier to see.

Right-half done:

All done:

Lastly, I put the Rebar's plier head into the Wave.

Thanks for the invite!  I joined that club already when I made a one leg Micra with a house key blade as a Keychain and a one leg Wingman with all the tools except the scissors and pliers.  I just didn't make tutorials for those.  ;)

I reheated the pivots to get make the red liquid again.  It may get cleaned out and blue installed when I go in for my next set of mods.  154cm stock should be getting delivered today.  The files will be getting a work out soon.

Did you have to do anything to the rebar plier head to make it fit properly? I've tried to put the rebar plier head into a new wave but it wouldn't close properly afterwards. The pliers are snagging something in one of the handles. I don't know what yet though.

I might have this wrong (long day not enough coffee) but it's probably the scissors.

Could also be the blade locking pins.  The base of the pliers head can catch the edge of the flat metal part that prevents the blades from opening while you're using the pliers.

I've seen someone say that with the blade locking pins, sometimes they don't work quite right with the Rebar head with it turned one way, but it works turned the other way.

I'll investigate this soon as I'm going to be pulling it back apart to get the blade out as a template to make a new blade out of 154cm.

I'll give that a try and see if it makes a difference

To rule out it snagging on a tool, open all of the implements and close the handles.  If it closes like this, the pliers are hitting a tool.  Open it back up, close one tool, and close it back.  Repeat until you find what is snagging.

I think it makes the Wave into a more serious tool.  The heavier plier head and the replaceable cutters are such an improvement.  I don't know why Leatherman doesn't use them across the board.

You may also want to check out my Reaver build.  It's a Rebar plier head with one Rebar handle and one Wave handle.

I think that they will eventually put the removable cutters on most of the tools, perhaps not the Juice or Skeletools or any of the smaller tools but as for the 4 inch and 4 an a 1/2 inch lines that are meant for work beyond the light duty range they will :tu:
