A worthy replacement for my Leatherman S1
on: July 17, 2016, 09:28:14 PM
After many years of service, my Leatherman S1 finally died a few weeks ago.

For the last few years its been tucked into one of the pen pockets in my work backpack and has travelled a fair bit as I have. It's helped my out whilst camping, finding locks in the dark and all sorts.

It's been a reliable friend to me for many years. I tried everything to revive it (well, gave it a couple of smacks) and alas it's as dead as the proverbial dodo - so I binned it.

So, what should I replace it with? Ideally it will have a similar form factor and run off a bog standard AAA or AA battery, and it would be a real bonus if it fitted in the elasticcy side bit thing of my Charge sheath!

I'd be leaning towards quality over cheapness. Any suggestions greatly appreciated - thanks!

The S1 was basically a fenix E01 with a switch, right? The E01 is still around and would basically duplicate the light output/runtime and is pretty inexpensive. Fenix now has an LD02 with a more modern emitter, multi mode with a tail switch. I've not owned one, but they seem to get good reviews.

I bought an olight i3s for a friend and was impressed with it for the price. It definitely doesn't have the bomb-proof feel of an E01, but I think it would survive a for bit of abuse.

I've been carrying a fenix ld01 for several years and am quite happy with it. Unfortunately, it has been discontinued, but if you can find one I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately, outside of those lights (and peak, but that a whole different can of worms), i don't have much experience

Hi Dave. Take a look at the Fenix E05. also available in a stainless steel edition.

I keep a Streamlight Microstream (1x AAA, 45 lumens) in the elastic pocket of my Wave sheath, it's a great light.

I'm torn between the E05 and the LD02, so I'll watch a few more reviews I think :)

I'm a die-hard fan of the E01...

I'd take a look at Fenix E12. That's a AA light, about 1/3 bigger than the E05 but so much more capability. It has a TIR lens which means a perfect, huge hotspot but not too much flood.

After much deliberation, I decided to give the Olight i3E EOS (120 Lumens) a go:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01E8AX0XG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'll be honest, mostly because of the copper colour, but it does seem to get pretty good reviews.

I'll let you know what I think of it when it arrives :)

My LD02 and i3EOS both get  :tu: from me.  My i3EOS is such a terrific light I love the strobe more than most do.  I also like the colors they come in.  My LD02 as performed flawlessly and the clicky is a nice touch on small light.

I wish I could say my SS Fenix E05 was in their league.  Mine has been problematic.  It has a mind of its own and decides when or if it will turn on.  Mind you I did get it second hand so .  I do like the size and weight and when it does decide to work the output.

Congrats on your choice.

Thanks Aloha - gives me some confidence in my choice  :tu:

In truth I don't have complicated demands of this one - it'll mostly be finding keys in my bag!

If that's all you use it for a "fauxton" may be a more economical choice  :pok:

For those who don't know what a fauxton is, prepare to be enlightened (pun intended    )

Yeah, but then I'd need a decent torch to find the Fauxtons ;)

In truth, I used the S1 for all sorts of things, and this will fit the bill I think.

I have the i3sEOS, which is very similar. I literally use mine every day. The addition of a magnet base added so much versatility and has made it an indespensible part of my EDC. I also made a wand diffuser that makes a great soft candle glow which can fill a room, depending on mode. It also doubles as my spare battery case. I think you made a great choice, Dave.....  :tu:

It's just part of accelerating the patina process. Now it has character and you won't be worried about dinging it more in use. :tu:

I've used lip balm top as a diffuser with great success.

The light looks awesome.  Copper is such a wonderful material.

I fixed the S1  :ahhh

I decided to have a proper go at it and it was just a corroded contact. I'll clean it a bit better in a minute, but it seems to be fixed.

I also found my S2 and a Monarch 300.

I guess I'm OK for lights for a while :D

That's the only small light I have with a clicky button, and I actually do like a clicky button sometimes.
