Display case 2: son of display case
on: July 25, 2016, 12:58:21 AM
Predictably, my previous display case filled up so I've started work on another.  I'm cheating this time, I bought an oak picture frame to use as a ready-made glazed door.  So I just need to build a box to go behind the frame and mount the knives in it.

This case will just be for 93mm alox.  The second picture is a prototype of my concept for mounting them.  A strip of wood to cup the top and bottom of the SAKs, with neodymium magnets to hold them in place.

The box to go behind the frame.  The parts have a rebate machined in the back edge to receive the plywood back panel, and a lip on the front to help support the picture frame.

It's assembled with simple glued butt joints, reinforced with screws.  I'll plug the screw holes later.

The oak strips for mounting 2 rows of 10 SAKs.  I made these using a forstner bit in a drill press, to make flat-bottomed holes of consistent depth.  You could easily do this with any sort of 15-16mm or 5/8" bit and a hand-held drill, if you made the strips in 2 layers: 3-4mm thick material for the top layer, drill straight through it and then glue it to a backing layer.

I sawed down the middle of each strip and planed them down to the required width.  With 15mm holes, you have to plane off quite a bit, leaving about a third of each hole for a good fit.  With 16mm or 5/8" holes, you'd want to keep closer to half of the hole.

I have a bunch of cellidors waiting to go in case number 1 when I clear out the aloxes, so I might need no. 3 already :)

NKlamerus, no I'm not in the trade, I wouldn't want to be.  Making a profit as a cabinet maker is all about working fast and efficiently, and I like to take my time.

I had some 3/8" oak dowel so I used that to plug the screw holes.  The end grain of the dowels will make a little design feature.  I've also done some sanding and waxing, and made a start on painting the plywood back panel.

Hinges fixed to the box, and felt applied to the front edge to make sure the door doesn't rattle.

1. On the bottom rail out of each pair, a little notch needs to be taken out next to each hole to clear the keyring.
2. The support rails nailed on to the painted back panel.
3. I've used masking tape to protect the paint while marking and drilling pilot holes for screwing on the magnets.

Hinges and catch installed; and with the back panel screwed in and the magnets installed, assembly is complete :)

I've mounted it on the wall above my other cabinet, using mirror plates screwed to the back of the case.
