Second attempt at fire.

I know this is beginner stuff but in my second attempt at starting fire with a fire steel was a success. I only used stuff I found in my backyard and some jupe rope, the rope makes it very easy I guess, as I was unsuccessful without it. Now it rained a lot yesterday and it was hard to find anything very dry. This is just the beginning for me as I'm interested in trying to learn the other techniques. But here are the pictures.

One or two tips: 

Split wood will always burn more easily.  If the wood is even slightly damp it'll be on the outside, by splitting the wood you'll expose the middle which is much more likely to be dry.

Once you've split your wood feather sticks are your friend.  Loads of guides as to how to make these but in essence what you are making are loads of shavings that are still held together.  If you make them fine enough then they'll take a spark from your ferro rod. :)

Congrats.  It looks like there are pine needles scattered on the ground.  Take a look at the trees for some pine sap which can be used with your jute twine.  Fuzz/feather sticks are fun to make.

Also, if you have a fixed blade that has a 90 degree spine, use the back of the blade and scrape on a piece of wood to get super fine shavings. These will ignite very easily with a ferro rod. Back of a saw blade works well too. Also makes for a great scraper for a ferro rod.

Thanks for the tips guys. And I've found that the newer stainless metal saw works very well on the ferro rod. Maybe even better than the old sharpened vic bottle opener, but that works very good too. Yes I have some pines in my backyard so I'll definitely try collecting some sap for the jupe twine.
