Not a Mora but I was ready to learn Norwegian to find out about this one!

A Trygve Kverneland (shown with a 50's Carl Andersson #2)
(Image removed from quote.)

Thanks to Crow and Grathr, it was ID'ed!

"It's an early Stainless Steel (SK-11) from the 1950's made by resident peasant blacksmith Trygve Kverneland associated with Stavanger Staal......in Western Norway (Rogaland)."
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,60882.msg1125200.html#msg1125200

I was scrolling down the page and your photo flashed passed, I thought "is that a Scandinavian Tanto??" and scrolled back for a better look.....

(fortunately)Not a tanto, but a very desirable knife!  :salute:

Thank you!!!  :salute:

you're a pragmatist? you don't want to be labeled a dooms day prepper or have to answer uncomfortable questions because of a more dangerous looking knife?

Pragmatist?  Definitely.......but that doesn't explain it.

Also I could strap a zombie decapitator to my leg, maybe even another one to my back, and walk around on the street or in a mall completely unmolested....

Just this past Friday on my way to the shop after work I saw a woman walking cradling an AK47 like it was a baby....

So NO, not swayed by public opinion

TIA

I have some Moras -Bahco 2444 in orange and in Laplander colours, Fireknife, Companion, Pro C- (for which I partially blame this den of iniquity ::) ) and I love them all and I am lusting after a 510 and a Garberg (I partially blame this den of iniquity for that as well -but only a little).

What I don't use get's moved on eventually so I guess I'm satisfied by these knives :tu:

My camera being away, here's a couple of recycled pics

Some nice ones firiki

+1!!!!

Thanks :) In reality each one represents a slighty different approach of the same concept and all work quite well for me.

I do think a 510 would be my most used one. Too bad they only come in carbon steel.

Look for an old KJ Eriksson 545...it's Sandvik 12C27 SS!

On the bottom.
(Image removed from quote.)

Hey, thanks (and apologies for the quite late reply  :-[)! I wasn't aware of these knives.

They seem a wee bit larger than the current Mora 510, I think? The current one is small and thin enough for most of my needs and I really like it :tu: Now, if the KJ 545s are about the same stock then I think I should start tracking down a couple of those.

One more thing I like about these knives is their ambidexterous sheath. It's good to have options. Knife retention isn't rock solid though (talking about current 510s) but that's probably on purpose as pulling the knife out would be rendered quite difficult if knife retention of those sheaths were indeed rock solid.

I'd like to join please.

Here's my Mora:

Nice Mags! Love the sheath also. It even has a place for a ferro rod.
Ferro rod? No, that's where I keep my emergency Red Vine. As you can see from the picture I had just had an emergency.

I love how you went and made such a great sheath for an inexpensive knife, magentus! :tu:

Does Mora mean "tenderize" in Swedish and Helle "to pour" in Norvegian?

Both names sound very nice in my language. They are both identical to ancient Greek words.

Mora (Μόρα) was the regiment of ancient Sparta. We still use the word as Moira (Μοίρα) which means a lesser military unit, the degree (as in the circle), or the fate. We also use the Nord term Mora, meaning the sleep paralysis.

Helle (Έλλη, written as ΗΕΛΛΗ before Koine) was a character in mythology, the girl that run away with the ram from which they made the golden fleece. The name is tied with Greece in many ways, since we call ourselves Hellenes and our country Hellas (Greeks were a tribe of the Northwest, the first Romans encountered, so they named all country Greece instead of Hellas. in a similar way, Ions were Hellenes of the East (Ionia), so Turks and many Asians call as Yunan). Hellen was the mythological patriarch of all Greeks.

I already named my new Helle Skala (Skala means ladder in modern Greek btw) Έλλη.

Thank you Poncho  Which one(s) do you like best?

Of those in the pics I like the Bahco branded one best but I do like the look of all Moras in general ( must be the Scandi grind  ) I wouldn't mind having any of the ones you have pictured though ;) Before the years end I plan on adding at least 1 if not 2 to my collection

It it just because of the looks? There are subtle differences between all these knives.

I like the Bahco ones because they're the same shape and length as the Companion but thinner which, for me, makes them better slicers. I much prefer the handle on the Companion though.

The Fireknife proved to be a tough and agile lil' bugger. I wasn't expecting that! It was my first scandi too and it made me appreciate them. I'm more of a flat grind man myself but I am very fond of my Moras.

The Companion is a heavier duty knife I keep as a back-up ::)

I'd have a hard time choosing only two of the ones pictured. Maybe if I get my hands on a 510 things will get easier :D

Mora is a actually a town about 250 km from where I'm at (not very far in Swedish terms). Tenderize would be Möra (note that the umlauts when used in Swedish denotes two new letters Ä and Ö.

Helle does mean “to pour” in Norwegian, but it also means a thin, flat slab of rock (and a couple of related meanings), which is the more natural interpretation in this case.

Mora, as the name of the place from which the knives get their name, has its etymology in a word meaning “dense forest on wet ground”.

Interesting to learn the same words pop up with such meanings in Greek.  :tu:

You forgot to mention that mora is the plural for baby  ;)

Yup, the word moron is Greek, folks. It's the neutral gender of moros that means a foolish man (man, not person) :salute:

Oh, and btw, in Norwegian Greece is “Hellas”, but still use variants of Greek when talking about the people or something which is Greek. :) (If forming the adjective of “Hellas”, it is related to ancient Greece.) Language is a lovely tool for confusion. :D

Here are the two that I own. I have some others but don't know if they qualify as Mora knives. Not sure the last one was even made in Sweden;no maker's mark anywhere.Blade has an extremely fine mirror polish.
