How Smashie spent Sunday afternoon
on: August 14, 2016, 06:47:17 PM
Something I learnt to do a long time ago was pick locks, well it was useful for my work at the time.

So after 20 years and only having had to pick one lock I thought a refresher would be in order.

So £20 later this was delivered this morning. Cheap and picks and torsion bars won't last long.

But I can open both of them now in around 40 seconds. I'm going to buy a few random locks tomorrow

Nice! Last year at work, there was a closet that had gotten locked somehow with a bunch of guys' stuff in it. The key had long been misplaced. I had that sucker open in two minutes with a couple of paperclips. Amazed, my boss asked me, "Where the hell did you learn how to do that?"

My answer?

"Boy Scouts" :D

There are two kinds of Boy Scouts - those that help old ladies across the street, and those that know exactly how much duct tape it takes to hold a screaming 14 year old upside down on a cabin wall. We were in the latter group..... >:D

I worked in Law Enforcement some time ago.  At one point in my career my partner decided to learn how to pick locks.  He must have been a slow learner because he spent the good part of months learning how.  It seems like an interesting thing to learn although I've never done it.  I've always found that a big set of bolt cutters or a forceful size 9 boot worked quite well.

As far as scouts and duct tape - never thought of that but was an unenthusiastic alter boy at one period  of my life.  The older boys were known to take the smallest one and put a coat hanger inside his garments and hang him up in the closet.  Evil little sods >:D

I was in a traditional BSA troop that was into camping, canoeing, and caving. If you had pulled that stunt on me I would have come after you with an axe.   :twak:

The boot and/or cutter method is my preferred way to pick locks as well, although given enough time I can usually pick them the usual way.  I'm not very good at it, nor am I terribly patient which is why I tend to use boots or cutters instead.

At one time back in the 1960s, High Standard ads featured a rugged-looking guy in a tuxedo shooting their pistols. James Bond anyone?

You'd be surprised at how easily many locks can be raked open.  I have a pick set and have bought many locks at the flea market to practice on.  Its pretty fun.

This guy has some awesome lock pick videos.

Looks like you have five and six pin practice locks and a wide assortment of picks. From what I can see you can do SPP, raking, rocking, and kinetic attack's on locks. Do you have any bypass tools? Bumping locks is fun. Have you tried the Bogota pick? If the lock doesn't have many security pins its usually a quick pick. Its a great hobby glad your enjoying it.

I'm actually finding it very relaxing. Sitting in front of the tv whilst picking locks by feel.

I've got a long way to go, but if I can get the basics down so I don't have to think about it then I can move on to more complicated locks :tu:

Scroll down the page as he has a step by step guide to lock picking.  I'm telling you as he says raking is pretty addictive.  I've raked open many locks and in all reality this is a great skill to have ( lock picking ).  Can you imagine the money you can save friends and family next time they lock themselves out?

I have played with locks and picks for many years off and on.  I too enjoy it and have a set or two around here plus some smaller individual picks.

LIke Aloha stated, raking is easy and works well on alot of locks.  I normally just carry a rake and a tensioner that are about 3 inches long at most which will get the job done 99% of the time!

It is fun to practice and a skill that could be handy for sure!
