The 30 Day "Traditional" Challenge!
on: August 16, 2016, 05:31:26 AM
Yeah, it's the middle of the month. Oh well. :)  Let's get some of those beautiful non-tactical classics in use! For the next 30 days, a slipjoint or other classic knife will be my main cutting tool. Who's with me? Let's see them - Barlows, Stockmen, Trappers, Opinels, and many more!

The rules:

1 - You must carry a traditional pattern knife for 30 days as your main blade. Slipjpints, Opinels, Douk Douks, Higos - the Mercator K55K is also allowed, having not changed for nearly 140 years. :)

2 - If you are unsure if a knife counts, post it and I will make a ruling.

3 - SAKs and multitools are allowed in your carry, but again, the traditional is to be your main cutting tool.

4 - We'll keep this all in this thread, like my Discontinued challenge was set up

5 - Any questions, post here or PM me.

I'll start it.off with a personal favorite, an American classic. I love the Buck 301 Stockman. :tu:

And away we go! Good luck and let's see some beauties!

Very nice! :tu:

One important point I forgot to mention in the OP - Don't be afraid to mix it up! I've got a bunch of traditionals, and many will see use through this. Like the Discontinued Challenge, as long as the knife qualifies, carry it, then the next day go to another!

I always carry a traditional folder so that shouldn't be a problem. Here is the knife I have been carrying since I got it a couple months ago.Guess I can carry it for another 30 days.Made by Vom Cleff Cutlery in Germany(company went out of business in 1913)it is a bit unusual in that the master blade locks open and is closed by pressing down on the manicure blade on the spine.

I'm going to have a merit badge made up for this. Like my earlier Discontinued Challenge, it's no problem if you later start your own thread to qualify. :)

I'll be in it for fun...no badge, because there may be days with no carry or no pix if health issues get in the way. :(  I really need to dust off my trads and give them some attention....I'll tote a SAK too in case I need  tweezers, file, screwdriver etc., and because...I'm SAK Guy! :D

Good luck everybody.

Traditional Challenge Day 1

I've never been one to "save the best for last", so I'm starting out right with my all-time favorite slipjoint and, naturally, the one I carry and use the most.

I suppose you could say this is a traditional with non-traditional scales.

#66 GEC/Tidioute stockman w/carbon blades and paper Micarta scales.

That's a beauty!

I would consider that a Wharncliffe profile, rather than a lambsfoot.

As promised:
The RR stockman I have been carrying today. (And yesterday)

I went to the grocery store yesterday to get some frozen schrimps. The freezer there was empty so I asked one of the girls who work there if she had more in storage. She came back with a box, but had no knife to open it, so I let her borrow the stockman. Her first response was:" ooh, fancy!" :D

Thanks NutSAK. :salute:  That's how it was described by the manufacturer - really I wanted a proper sheepsfoot, but the nickel sliver bolsters caught my eye.

What wood is used for those scales?  Looks like it could be birds-eye maple.  She was right of course, it is fancy!  ;)

I honestly dont know. I doubt that it is anything exotic, as it is a fairly cheap RR knife after all ;)
