A method for a less noisy Altoids tin kit
on: August 21, 2016, 06:29:39 PM
I really hate stuff clicking/jingling/whatevering when I carry them around. Altoids tins are an excellent source of irritation in that regard. I thought of clothing the insides with felt or cork, but 1-3 mm on all sides adds up to quite a lot of lost volume. Then I had the idea of simply adding a couple of 10 mm diameter felted wool balls to fill empty space.  It works like a reusable, natural form of packing chips. The nice thing about wool is the elasticity, so it works even if I take something small out.

It's simple and it works, so I thought I'd share. I bought the balls from a local hobby store, but I guess the proper MT.o way would be to make them myself.

Wool actually dont burn well.
Amongst historical reenactors, "the flame test" is a primitive way to determine if a garment is made from pure wool or not.  >:D Pure wool wont burn. Wool mixed with cotton, or acryllic will.

I guess fire blankets wouldn't be made of wool if it was very flammable...  :D

How about cotton balls? They would be flammable and probably work the same for sound reduction.

Other people have used cotton balls with success. I don't like them that much since they produce more lint and aren't springy like wool. Win some, lose some.

Soak them in vaseline and put them inside a ziplock bag. They still can be used to cut the noise and you get a tinder bag that won't evaporate and won't grease up the rest of the tin contents.
