So, what's your job ?
on: August 29, 2016, 08:22:00 PM
Hi,

So I join this forum quite recently, and mainly hangout in the SAK board.

I see many of you use multitool on regular/daily basis, so I'm wondering what kind of job you have.

I myself hav been working as a tech journalist in France. It does not really require a multitool, right now I mostly use it on the weekend.
But long story short, my company is currently trying to get rid of all the journalists by the end of the year, so i'm currently wondering what I can do now.
I'm actually thinking about closing the door on high tech and find a job on the open air. i'd love to be a forest ranger.

Gimme some inspiration :) What's your current job ?

I am a physician, Psychiatrist. I use my tools, not on people (because then I would be a surgeon or forensic doctor) but I fixed many times things around in my office and the several Opioid Substitution Units I was running and/or I established. I only left them outside prisons (where I established two units).
But, to be sincere, I mostly use them for recreation, leisure and relief from work stress. They are some of my toys.

Educated in experimental biophysics, but have worked as a programmer my entire professional career.

As for working in forestry, I personally love trees, but not heavy lifting.  ;) I recently read The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben. There's quite a lot of interesting science behind his very emotional language and romantic conclusions for which I think there is insufficient scientific backing. His basic message I think is sound, trees process quite a lot of information.

I used multitools at the university, but as a software guy the MTs are only used at outside work and for handling life's small kicks in the groin now.

I'm a medical school student... Being a student = lots of running around and improvising / taking care of / fixing things the best way you can;  so SAKs / multitools can be quite useful.

And yes, I carry my SAK on me even in hospital

Grant relayed a story about a SOSAK member who actually used a SAK to remove screws from a patient's spine or cranium during an operation, IIRC. :D Hope someone who remember the details can chime in.

I'm a linguist, studied languages, German and Hungarian (not English, which might explain all those spelling errors :P ) I work as a teacher, court interpreter and translate other stuff now and then. Used to be a tour guide too.

I wanted to be a carpenter but decided on languages instead. I have a full carpenters workshop at home however that I inherited from my grandfather, added some tools, and love to play there when I have the time. ;) I also spend lots of time outdoors, camp a lot, and cave so having a good multi and SAK comes in handy quite a lot.

Blacksmith at a Civil War fort, yeah that is an odd thing to write. I have a pocket knife that I whittle with sometimes.  It has to be a special situation for me to use non 19th century tools, so I have only used a SAK once at work trying to remove nails from a common sponge.

That said if I can move on to better museum work, a SAK or MT becomes really hand for little tasks.

Just another weirdo with a beard :B:

I'm a sales associate for Procom Wireless, our parent company is Verizon.  I have worked in Grocery for the last 20 years and was looking to try something different.  I traded in my job as a Manager of a grocery store to selling phones. What a change

Medical instrument technician. Most of my multitools and even SAKS are to big and cumbersome for the work in doing now but I keep my skeletool in my bag and having use for a very sharp knife find that a Victorinox florist's knife takes a wicked edge. My pocket EDC remains my old model 91mm Ranger.

I trained as an electronics technician and blacksmith
Did some time at a electronics contractor working on harnesses for subways and millitary.
At diffrent points along the way I've worked in construction, plastics, telemarketing, printing, and agracuture.
Spent 10yr in fall protection while smithing on the weekends.
Was founding member of the Oil Valley Blacksmiths Association, ABANA Chapter. Well we started in 99 and didnt become ABANA till 04 I think. When was it they changed from "chapters" to "affiliates" cause it was that year.
I miss that and am trying to get a shop set up again.
Now I am a full time driver and am studying for an engineering degree

Fire Captain for a large industrial Fire Department. I used to carry a Wave all the time, but now that I'm an admin weenie I've stepped down to a Juice S2 (the Wave is in my bag...shhhh). There are a lot of things that need tightened, loosened, pried, twisted, folded, spindled and mutilated in a fire station on a daily basis. But mostly I use it remove staples and open lunch :-[

Seriously now, I'm a secretary and also receptionist/archivist/errand boy. I like my job most of the time but I'm really considering pursuing something else.

For years, I carried a Knifeless Fuse due to work restrictions. Nowadays, I just hid a Swiss+Tech Utili Key along with all my keys as I retired the Leatherman a year after I found out it was now discontinued. I am a high school teacher. My papers say I am qualified to teach science and geography. However, I have also had the great fortune of teaching many different subjects in the past, and am sure I will do so in the future.

In my 16 years, I  have taught the following subject matter:

- outdoor education
- photography
- mathematics
- geography/geomatics
- general science/biology
- media arts
- graphic arts
- special education
- civics/careers
- history
- keyboarding/business computers
- independent studies (booklet work)

What they do not tell you about teaching, is that you have to be very flexible.
