Why we mod?
on: August 31, 2016, 09:01:13 PM
Modding isn't about clamping as much stuff together as physically possible.
(If you wish challenge yourself, that is a different story)

Modding is about improving an existing tool.
Pick a platform that works for you, use the tool, identify its weaknesses and shortcomings, modify the tool so it can serve you better. The modification doesn't have to be extensive, but end result should still be elegant, practical, functional and simple.

Your Mileage May Vary, of course.

I agree.

In my work, I am thought of as a real life McGuyver. Any advantage I can gain by molding a tool or attachment,  I'm for it.
That being said, I am a novice to molding my waves. Over the last 20 years, I've misplaced/lost 2 newer waves, a black surge and 2 wingman. I've ordered a few pre-loved LMs to try my hand at a mini-surge. My current wave is an original wave that I've managed to hold onto for over 20 years. Yet,  it may not be safe once all the new parts arrive.
Can you say "rangebag" multi?

I do it cause I'm damn good at it! And because when someone tells me it can't be done, well that's a challenge to me. I guess I've been doing for many years as almost everything I use and own is modded in some way or another.
And if your really good at it people will pay you to do it ahh ahh
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

For that reason I expect to see some monstrous results.
And practicality is out the window.

I'm thinking of adding the bronze scraper and either make a delrin "bit" or a inside tool of delrin for pressing pins.
I might use the rebar saw on the inside, making the scraper easily accessible.
But practicality and ease of use will be the main idea

I do it for fun, mostly. I take pride in my mods, and enjoy the challenge of taking an existing tool and improving it. Nothing quite like carrying and using a tool you have put a lot of thought, sweat and heart into.

And welcome shadowulf, its pleasure to have you here

I mess around with modding because I've always been a tinkerer and like to occasionally push the boundaries. Especially with doing things that people say can't be done... our shouldn't. e.g. a m1908 Solo. Been doing more rejuvenationso than mods lately and actually find it more satisfying. Must get back into scratch building another folder.

G'Day,

Interesting discussion Kampfer. I think there will be some very insightful replies.

I mod for a couple of reasons:
Can it be done? - a challenge to oneself as been mentioned before
Improving a tools functionality - to suit Me and My needs. Luckily we are all individuals and no one tool will be perfect for all of us.
Legal reasons - I have removed some knife blades to enable me to carry a MT under any circumstance in out Nanny State. During work hours I have valid reasons to carry a MT but outside that it can be confiscated by law if I act stupidly. The kids can also then carry and use them without any worries from Mr. Plod.
For Fun - to see what can be swapped between tools and different brands ie. Leatherman and SOG.
Innovation - for example the Fantastic work Evil does.
Bragging Rights!!! I was the first to try that  :D

So gentleman, bring your glass or cup and join this exciting discussion.

Cheers,

Pete

I think my appearance would frighten people and I would be cast out of society, so more of a HoboSAK really. Can I rifle through your trash for leftovers Ponch? If you throw away some unopened cans I could use my can opener attachment.

I have always been a tinkerer.  I love to tweak things to be exactly what I want if an improvement has been recognized.

I mod because while a MT may be best for everyone in it's stock configuration, it may not be best for me.

I mod, therefore I am?

For me, it's because I like to tinker. I love to see how things work and see if I can make them work better. Also, because a lot of stock multi's aren't to my specifications. :)

It's also how I found this forum... Looking for ways to trick out my EDC.
