Barlow/Jack with sheepsfoot secondary blade
on: September 05, 2016, 04:36:37 PM
Having carried a few cheap slipjoints for the traditional challenge, I've got a better picture of what kind of knife I'd like to get next.  This one, in fact:

Unfortunately, this was run was made last year for collectorknives.net and I'm not sure if I can get one easily.  Does anyone know of an alternative or something similar?  Would like the following features:

3 1/2" - 4" closed length
Slip joint
Sub-3" spear, clip or drop point main blade
Sheepsfoot, coping or wharncliffe small blade
Stainless blades preferred, but carbon steel would be OK
Barlow or similar pattern preferred but other handle styles OK
Synthetic or smooth natural handles

Any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks dks. :tu:

The Beagle would be great except for the overall length - too small at 2 3/4".

Almost perfect - the bone handles are a bit bright but otherwise that one's great. Will look for other Queen Barlows.

Not yet, and I've been looking for a week.  The three I just posted are all customs and out of my price range.  The Northfield but with a slightly darker micarta/G10 handle would be perfect.

I'm going to order a Rough Rider Trapper kit and see what I can build.

A week? You know the MTo way is;
1.Have thought
2. buy first thing you see that resembles your thought
3 wait on doorstep for posty
4 open package
5 play for a couple of hours
6 decide it's not quite right
6 order another
7. repeat steps 2 through 6 ad infinitum.

It is unfortunate that RR does not sell what you want

I also checked Sheffieldfamoussshop but they did not seem to have anything.

I think the RR Trapper kit with a few mods might be about right, as long as the clip blade isn't too long.

Shorten the spey blade and reshape to a sheepsfoot, cut a new nail nick and swap them in the frame so the sheepsfoot is in front of the clip.  New covers made from G10 and a slight reshape of the handle and liners to remove the bump in the middle of the handle.

Arthur Wright make some models that are very close:

As does Joseph Rodgers:

Unfortunately GEC doesn't make every pattern every year. So you can exercise a lot of patience (not the MT.o way) or look on the secondary market. Again patience.
Good luck  :salute:

The main problem was finding a Sheepsfoot, coping or wharncliffe secondary blade.

If you are willing to mod it you have many choices - be careful not to destroy the heat treatment.

Yep.  Trappers would seem to be the obvious place to start - about the right length and the spey blade is big enough to cut down.  Anything with a fairly big pen secondary blade would be a good candidate, but I don't really want to start grinding away at a £70+ knife.

Ordered the RR Trapper kit - should be here today.  Have seen some good results, so hopefully I can make something decent from it.

Colonial (and another AKA of theirs, Providence Cut Co, I think), made a Barlow with a sheepsfoot main, and pen secondary. They're excellent knives, and are real cheap too--I see many from time to time under ten bucks.

Here's a Providence a guy on another board restored:

Rough rider also has one with sheepsfoot mainblade, and clip point small blade. I got one, and it is called Half Hawk if you want to check it out.

Thanks for those suggestions.  The sheepsfoot main/pen secondary seems to be much easier to obtain so I might go for one of those instead.  The RR half hawk is definitely a contender as is this little beauty:
