Mako Ti counterfeit
on: September 07, 2016, 08:22:52 AM
Picked this up for 4$ knowing it was an EDC brand knock-off of the Mako. What I wasnt expecting was full Leatherman package and markings.
Normaly knock offs are too round or sharp in thier stampings and the wrenches are out of tolerance. The edges and jimping are not as clean as my actual LMs, but the wrenches seem corect. The body is slightly magnetic unlike most Ti alloys which use non ferrous metals, listing says SS while tool/pkg says Ti.
The body is also considerably thicker than the Croc or Lm6 more akin to my fake Brewz. The bits lack markings, and recieved an extra  Phillips but no T25. The marking is inked not stamped like the Croc oretched like the 6.

Did LM run OPT production overseas and this is made post contract using old worn out dies?
Or is it an out and out forgery?

Either way the fact it came in a LM blister makes me angry. I knew I was buying a fake to add to my collection but others might not.
The listing on ebay says unbranded, but  a bad reseller could pass it off to the unknowing.

The ST300, Croc and LM6 in the pics are real, the "Brewz" is not.

 :pok:

Complete copy as far as I know.  I doubt very much LM would make anything overseas- certainly not if they are going to put the Oregon Pride logo on it.   :ahhh

Maybe send Leatherman a email with some info. I know other companies appreciate when you tell them about full on counterfeits.

I already did.  As soon as I made the post I sent Leatherman a link to let them know.  I also still have the name and address on the label, not that it will do any good.

But it's their choice to pursue it or not. I can provide all the info I have and other members have,  but it's up to us to decide of the tool is any good or not, nor to chase down legal issues, crappy as they may be.

It's amazing that the packaging even looks legitimate ??? Hope that this thing performs well enough for the people that don't know LM didn't make it that it doesn't give them a bad name

Thanks for the heads up guys :like:
