26. Going with the OC Settler, this is going to be challenging.  :ahhh

The Settler is a good companion knife, but my dedicated tools will definitely see some use today.  :salute:

I am so impressed with the SI - already this morning it has fixed a towel rail, cut down some cardboard boxes and made breakfast. The awl points North too.  :D

Day 23:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)

Limited now to discontinued as well for that challenge, the Sentinel Plus has the honors again. This morning I wanted to hook up audio cables from an PC 2.1 external audio system with sub-woofer to the 32" master bedroom TV (much better than the TV's internal speakers). It's at chest level and cannot see behind it to find the TV's line level audio output phono jacks.

Not wanting to run off to go get the mirror I would normally use for this, I improvised with what was immediately at hand, the mirror polished finish on the large spearpoint blade on the Sentinel Plus, along with the Maglite Solitaire I carry on my keyring for some light. One channel connected. Just need to connect the other one and we're done.

Yet another unlisted tool in the SAK arsenal! Need to see behind or under something that's awkward to put eyes on directly? Don't forget about that mirror finish on the SAK's large blade!

I'm still trying to post a pic today. Phtobucket is still down. I tried out Flikr and that sucked. I tried posting pics and it doesn't work,  and the user interface is pants.

Use the "Attachments and other options" below the text editor and attach the pix as files from your PC. You can do up to four.

No, not yet, and the Sentinel Plus has tweezers too! Had thought about shaving with it, but that requires having to switch between looking at the side of the blade and using the edge to shave with. Concluded it would take too long, mostly to stem the flow of blood. If we keep touting all the personal grooming features of these SAKs, some might start to see them as being a bit "girly" (like the hook file). :o

Day 27/30
Switched to the Wenger. This one takes a nice sharp edge. Turns out it cuts great!

I gave the Classic a rest because I'm dreaming of what my first Alox should be. I'm struggling between a Cadet and a Pioneer X. I don't have a 91mm that qualifies for the challenge, so I grabbed the Wenger. The compactness,  color options and nail file of the Cadet really appeal to me.  But,  I'm afraid that due to my large mitts, a 93mm may be more appropriate, and the scissors are a major bonus. An Alox would be carried in addition to a Classic on the keys.

I have a Pioneer X and a Cadet. To me they have different characters. The addition of the scissors thickens the Pioneer substantially compared to a Pioneer (or Soldier) as it's a "thick" layer versus a thinner one like the saw or file. That said, it's still a little thinner than the equivalent Cellidor Super Tinker as it doesn't have the outer liners or need space for T&T. The Cadet is very slim as the 84mm Alox scales are thinner than the 93mm Alox scales, much slimmer than a Sportsman. It carries in a front pocket very easily in a glove leather slip case. Depends on what you want to carry, which is how I generally decide what I will take with me each day. If in doubt, get both! If you decide you don't like one, then flip it.

Attched some quick and dirty pix. From left to right:
  • Super Tinker (black scales; keep in mind this color may make it look thinner)
  • Pioneer X
  • Cadet
  • Sportsman (red scales)

I must say I will be happy to see the challenge end  :surrender:

I am generally very enthusiastic about minimalist pocket knives. For me the challenging aspect is sticking to just one SAK for an entire day.  :ahhh
The only thing better than a minimalist SAK is a set of complementary minimalist SAKs.

I am tempted to aquire a set of compacts and change the scissor layer on each for the different tool layers in a swisschamp. (and backside phillips where appropriate)
Now where did that lottery ticket salesman scamper off to?
