Rough Rider Trapper kit build
on: September 09, 2016, 10:34:35 PM
Started looking for a two blade traditional knife with a clip/spear main blade and a sheepsfoot secondary and non-natural handles (more here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,68299.0.html) , but couldn't find anything that took my fancy in my price range.

Stumbled upon the Rough Rider kits and the Trapper looked like it might fit the bill, with a few modifications.

As delivered

Used the wooden covers and brass liners as a template to rough out some 3mm black G10 sheet for the build

Drilled the holes for the cover rivets and the centre spring pin.  Used a tapered diamond burr to countersink the covers for the rivet, and countersunk the back of the liners with a drill bit for the same reason.

Made sure that the covers were a tight fit between the bolsters, then sanded the liners and the back of the G10 to give a good key for the epoxy.  Glued and pinned them in place.

Clamped them up in the vice to let the glue set overnight.

My kit just arrived. The dog decided to open it for me, but my daughter rescued the package before the contents got chewed  ::)

I won't have chance to have a proper look for a couple of days, but it looks to be a Buck 110-a-like which is cool :)

Anyhoo hiraethus - how did yours look this morning?  :pok:

No pics tonight, but the covers have stuck nicely to the liners and I started to shape the handles.  Have done a couple of trial builds and it's got very little snap so far.  Have already tweaked the springs to improve the snap and that's helped, but I will polish all the tools and springs next time I get chance to see if I can improve the action. Need to shorten the spey blade and cut a new nail nick next.

I think it's junk.  Or maybe I'm doing it wrong. ???  There's nowhere near enough spring pressure to get decent snap on the blades.  Plus I reckon the springs and blades are too soft - they're easily marked with a file and bend with little force so I don't think they'll be good enough.  I don't think it's worth me carrying on with the build, which is a shame as my two factory made Rough Riders (a Barlow and a Canoe) are very nice and have a great action.

Maybe it is supposed to be a learning kit- toy, rather than something you actually use?

If not, sent it back.

I've gone too far with the build to send it back, and it was only a tenner anyway.  I'll have another go at it this week and see if  I can salvage something.

Sorry to hear it Hi :-\ Was looking forward to seeing this knife in use but I wouldn't carry something like that either :-[

Hopefully something can be salvaged from it :tu:

Right, well I finally got around to taking the bits of my kit out of their plastic just now and did a dry fit to see how well it all fits together:

Initial indications are that it fits together pretty well!

Obviously, backspring tension is less of an issue on this Buck 110-a-like locker than on hiraethus' slipjoint, but it actually feels ok on the dry-fit, and I'd expect it to get a bit more snappy when it's all peened.

I'm not sure yet whether to simply finish the scales as they intended, or whether to try something a bit fancier. It'll be a while before I can have a proper go at it so I have time to decide :)

I no longer have the power tools at my disposal that I used to make the SAK scales with - so this is going to be a proper hand crafted job, lol.

Excellent, glad it's going well.  Got a belt sander, pillar drill, Dremel and a bunch of other useful stuff in the shed if you want to use them.
