What is your "Holy Grail" knife?
on: September 26, 2016, 12:17:31 AM
I've seen this topic in general, but for this thread I'm thinking specifically folders or fixed blades. What knife is on your list but is either out of reach or so up there that to get it you'd have to take a major :megaslap: from your spouse, or one you actually have attained? I've always wondered about the Sebenza and now the Benchmade 940-1 is just  all over the place. Both are really high end knives. If I had to choose just one it's most likely going to be the 940-1. What's your Grail knife?

Except for the new TM, if I had 200 bux for every time I could've and should've bit the bullet and bought them anyway...

Every single combat military CS I HAVE BOUGHT HAS SKYROCKETED IN VALUE!!!

I sit around laughing my head off at the people who said to me "I don't know why you bought "X knife" they'll never be worth..."

I'm with you on the Benchmade 940-1. I used to own a 940 and regret selling it, one of the best knives on the market. If I had a grail knife it's probably one of the ones I once had and now don't.  Spyderco T-Mag, Emerson Commander, Surfire EW04, the list goes on.  I've owned lots of cool stuff and when it comes down to it I can't keep it all lol. I'm carrying a Chris Reeve small sebenza  21 and it's about perfect for me.

Let's see. I have several.

Randall Astro. $500 is way too much for a knife--in fact 10X my high end price for one.

NASA Spyderco Delica--don't even know if any were made available to the public--knife is white, with NASA logo in red (the old one) replacing the "Bug". Unlike the Master Craftsman, which was really just a regular one with white Velcro on the handles--this was a special run for NASA.   Only one that sold was Tom Sachs' personal knife, with this name Sharpied on the blade. Apparently only 100 were ever made.

V-42 Stilleto--I had a great-great uncle who carried one in WWII. The knife was stolen in the 1970s.  At least I got his Pilot's Survival Knife from Korea or Vietnam--which is in a safe deposit box, which my grandmother made for me back when I first started collecting knives.

Barnett Plier Knife--I really want one to carry and use.

Cattaragus Stockman from the '30s with a nice looking swedged, spear point main.

And finally, Remington (not Bear made) Scout. This is the original from the '20s and '30s.

Ok ok, I'd like a traditional folder from the turn of the century to go with my 1890 silver dollar.

Those Randall knives are up there is each knife hand made?

I only caught wind of the 940-1 recently. It's really impressive in paper. I would love to get one in hand one day. The carbon fiber is what I'm most curious about. It looks a tad bigger than the Centofante 3.

This is my Holy Grail knife:a folder(any folder) made by Heinrich H. Frank. I got to hold one about 30 years ago and the asking price then was $5,000.00. At that time if you wanted to have him make one for you be prepared to wait almost 15 years! He was primarily a top shelf gun engraver but made knives on the side. The knife shown is solid gold.

Most Randall's are now...a combo of handmade, blades are still forged from what I understand, but tooling has been "upgraded" a bit to speed production without sacrificing quality. The old school handmade Randall's will hurt you and whatever you use em on...in many ways!!

It's kind of a point of honor. Back in the late 70s early 80s when I started knifesharking, if you didn't have a Randall #1 or #14, in the USA, you just weren't a "real collector " till ya did!

It was the Swisschamp, got it, then the XLT, got it, then the XAVT, got it.
Now, I don't like many tactical knives. I like some Spydercos and mostly the Delica, got the Endura and it's the same.
Traditionals are appealing to me, among them yellow or blue Case Stockman or Whittler are the ones I like the most, but no Holly Grail.
Multitools have been regarded so, Juice Pro, got it, Charge TTi, got it, Spirit, got it.
Thankfully, knives and multitools are never as unreachable as a good 8"-12" apochromatic telescope on a mount that can support it.

Yeah...my grandfather was my whole life when it came to a knife. Back when I was a wee lad, his thing was CASE, and he HATED stainless steel knives! Hence my affection for CASE TRAPPERS....and my wife loves CASE!!....SCORE!!

The reign of 440 junk has come and gone.

440 C is good steel IMHO IF IT IS PROPERLY HT and tempered like BUCK old school or CASE stainless, As long as you use it as a knife, and some dudes just can't tell the difference between a knife and other tools

I found a Holly Grail.
It is a Moonstone Seahorse Whittler.
If there exists any.

I don't have a grail knife - but the two knives I'd really like at the moment that are hard to find are a Spyderco Rock Lobster and a good quality 3 1/2" - 3 3/4" Barlow with dark green micarta handles and a large spear/small sheepsfoot blade in carbon steel.

Wow! That would be some years older than the Holly Grail itself!
With a handle made from Cedrus libani from the Forest of Cedars of God, bronze rivets and an iron blade. And Joseph engraved on the handle, or Emmanuel or something.

Exactly....everybody focuses on the cup, but could you imagine a tool that carpenter used?? Wow...

Have to say I don't have a true holy grail, every thing I want is out there just more then I am willing to pay at the moment.  But if you gave me money that could only be used on knives well then:

WWII Kabar
Old soldier
Cold Steel Cuttlass, or some other quality cuttlass.
Case Scout with mammoth ivory scales

Just another weirdo with a beard :B:
