I have been unemployed ever since I got hurt in January and it has been a bit of an uphill battle finding a job at my age after moving to a city that doesn't have the industry I have been working in for the last 8 years or so.  And, the industries I could work in easily enough, like retail, foodservice, or working the door in a bar are not ideal for someone with limited mobility issues.

After having applied for dozens of jobs, I finally got a nibble a couple of months ago, and now, after jumping through many hoops, my training is finally complete and I am now a full fledged employee of Canada Post.  It's not a full time position, but it might lead to that- for now I am just what they call "on call relief" which means I will do different routes to cover vacations, sick days etc.  Whatever needs to be done.

So, I'm on call, used as necessary and ignored when I am not, but I am employed once again, and that's at least something worth mentioning.  :D

Shoes are a huge priority.  Fortunately this is largely a driving position, and I will be delivering almost exclusively to community mailboxes like these:



Unfortunately there is also a lot of mail sorting in the position, and that involves a lot of standing, reaching, leaning and stepping back and forth as I sort mail into large frames, and that is a lot more painful that I want to admit.  This is what the frames look like:



I try to pre-sort it so that there is as little movement as possible, but that takes even more time and I won't know what route(s) I'm doing from day to day, so I really won't know any route well enough for extra sorting to be effective.

Still, it is a positive step, and I am looking forward to contributing to society again.  Luckily I have had enough irons in the fire over the past six months that we haven't really suffered significantly (no lost credit cards, no unpaid bills etc) but we have missed out on a few opportunities, and I am looking forward to putting some money in the bank that doesn't immediately fly right back out.  :ahhh

I had an old GF who used to work in the Post Office in Chicago (big one) and she said: "The more work you do there, the more work they give you!" and "The less work you do the less they give you." and I have taken that statement with me in many situations in life but it seems in government and certain situations it's very true.

Congratulations Grant, and I wish you all the best with it. I hope the more painful aspects of the role become more comfortable as your body gets more familiar with the repetition (or that you develop strategies to lessen the discomfort)
