This is the kind of stuff I wish I could find more of when I travel - I can buy Gucci handbags anywhere, but actual local stuff is hard to find in the tourist traps!

This is the most basic trick. It can become second nature and then you keep doing it without realising it. :D Then you develop muscle memory and start playing with it in other ways, more personal and dependent upon the mood.
