Lube for a Core?
on: October 26, 2016, 12:40:47 PM
Hi chaps,

i'm looking at lubricating my LM Core. Now, i'm not talking about the tools as i have used 3-in-1 on those pivots. What i'm asking is the actual point where the scales hold the plier pivot. As you probably know, the Core has plastic inserts at this point and i have resisted using 3-In-1 as i don't want to encourage any pocket lint or detritus to cling to the oil and wear the plastic anchor point. So far in it's 9 year life it has operated perfectly but it's now stiffening before it's annual spruce-up and wonder if anyone just splashes the oil on anyway or if there is an alternative? Would WD40 have any effect on the plastic? Thanks for all your suggestions in advance.

I got several Blasts and one Core and the only lubricant I use (for all my tools, my SAKs, other Folders and stuff) is the Victorinox Oil:

Never had any problems with it.
As far as I know WD40 is not agressive when it comes to plastic. Not sure 100% because I dont use it on my tools.

I recently switched to nano oil for the pivots on all my multis

Leatherman recommends WD-40 on their website.  I think any oil will do the trick, and would not be concerned about any plastic inserts.  Just giver her a blast with the WD-40 or whatever, wipe it off and rock on.

Lately I've been using Wahl Clipper oil for a lot of this sort of thing.

No issues so far :)

(Can't say as the Zytel etc etc, but it's a nice thin clear oil)

Hehe...

I'm glad I'm not the only one. :D

I second nano oil, though, I wonder if graphite powder (what you'd use for locks, for instance) would work, too?

Zytel is quite oil resistant, so no need to have concerns there. I use mineral oil, or liquid paraffin for us Brits. I got mine off Amazon. It's food safe in case the tool comes in contact with edibles, or even just gets on your hands before eating.
