Still without an inline awl :-\ :D I have decided to start disassembly of my other two donors >:D :ahhh I have already popped off the scales of the Champion and took all the extras like the pin, pen, T and T out and put them aside in a spare Altoids tin

Just wondering now though  What is the best way to take off the bushings and still be able to reuse the pin stock?  I am thinking a drill would be best and go slowly as to not mess the bushing up but would a file of some type be better

Also what is the best way to take out the pins in the pruner  Drill? Or since I am not reusing anything but the blade would a file be quicker?

Start on the backside with the corkscrew side facing up... drill the holes using 2.5mm and 2.2mm drill bits respectively... gently loosen and remove to bushing for later use...

I use nail punches to tap out the pins slowly... do this layer per layer so that it will be easy to lay out all the parts... easier this way to remember which goes where... that's how I took this pic

Poncho, have a read of this: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,9808.0.html - I found it very helpful. :tu:

I'd file the ends of the pins on the pruner - as you don't need to keep the scales there's no need to worry about wrecking them.

You would think I would have known to read that first   I did read it when Gareth first posted it but after 7 years guess I forgot everything I read in it :D Thanks for the link Hi and yes the file route on the pruner seems to be the most effective way to get the blade out since I am not saving the sales on it :tu:

Hmmm, kinda got me thinking... Now I have the urge to build a Ranger with minimal backtools (with just corkscrew and awl) and replace the small blade with an inline awl... :sigh:

If not for wanting the inline Phillips, that would be the way I went pretty much as well

Poncho, if you save the scales someone else might be able to make use of them?
Why not practice with the drill, if doesn't matter if you wreck them anyway? Good practice for if you ever want to save the scales?  :D
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

No problem, just my 2 cents. :D
I'm just of the opinion that if you have a alox knife to disassemble and the scales don't matter, its a great opportunity to practice your fine drilling!

And if you make a thin alox with saw...

I think a good modded SAK would be a tool only SAK to pair with a dedicated folder.

Maybe I can attempt this soon.

Who knows I may try something along this lines as well

 :like:

I'm thinking, opening layer, magnifying glass and inline Phillips pliers, scissors, maybe saw and file.  Backside Phillips, hook, chisel, and awl on back.....

I meant about drilling the pruner pins out ;) I may try and put a saw in this and it will be a saw and only a saw :D I will def take pics of whatever I do though

Still without an inline awl but I figured I would go ahead and disassemble and clean the champion and take out the pruner blade to prepare for my mod :tu:

Then after I got it apart I put it all in warm soapy water to soak  After soaking for a bit I went in with a toothbrush and cleaned it all up :tu:

After drying it all I figured I would give it a go and see how it was going to go :D I wanted to see if the pruner blade would go into the opening layer :tu:

20161114_204513 by Poncho 65, on Flickr

I realized that I was going to have to make a spacer and I just happened to think about an old Chinese knock off SAK I had taken apart many years ago (it probably was falling apart anyways  :D ) I found the can opener and marked it to make a spacer

20161114_202713 by Poncho 65, on Flickr

I then took my Dremel and went to work on it

20161114_202713 by Poncho 65, on Flickr

The result was a very decent spacer that was the right width :like:

Now back to assembly  It went smoother than I thought and I used a Champion that I already had to go by for putting it back together :tu:

20161114_214308 by Poncho 65, on Flickr

I ended up not having enough pin stock to finish with bushing and peening  but I did get it back together enough to test it all and I am happy with the result :like: After I get some new pin stock and get the inline awl I am confident that I will be very satisfied with my new creation

Thanks Steve :hatsoff: Wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be  Just wished I had the awl and long enough pin stock and I would have new scales ordered for this and it would be in my pocket ASAP :like:

I have thought of wood  But I want this SAK to have all the bells and whistles of Plus scales and I don't know if I would have the patience to add all the slots  :D
