How do you guys feel about Damascus?
on: November 21, 2016, 05:48:33 PM
Just wondering what you guys thought about Damascus knives. Do you think it really helps with blade retention, is it a gimmick or just something  else to get us to buy because it is pretty? :dd: :D

I have a few pocket knives in it and love the way it looks but I don't feel that it cuts any better than regular carbon or stainless steel and I probably haven't cut enough with any of them to test edge retention

So thoughts?

Also since it adds to the cost  (significantly in some cases) is it worth the extra? :D

Damascus that is forged like a japanese sword will undoubtly make for a better knife (why else would the Japanese samurai go through all the effort?)

For the chemical process that mimicks Damasc layers though...

It is just for looks.

Historically, maaaaaaany years ago, it was made with special metal, or was the only way to make certain objects.

now it just looks nice, until you use it and the etching is removed....

there are also various grades/types. you have SS damascus, like the one used by victorrinox and some really cheap rubbish used on ebay, low end, knives.... but it looks good, when new (you can re-etch it if you want, using acid)

Modern metallurgy has rendered it obsolete in any practical sense, but there's no doubt it's pretty.

Agree with Gareth and dks. It's all for looks, not function. It offers no functional benefit over the myriad of knife steels already available. If you want "pretty", then go ahead, but if you want performance attributes, there's better alternatives at lower prices (depending what attribute you're chasing)

On one of my knives the different metals used in the blade are more visible on the spine. It actually looks to be different types of steel in those blades that when ground would give it the Damascus appearance

It is the one I am carrying and I will try to get a pic of this and put it up so you can see what I am talking about :tu:

I love damascus. Modern damascus is a trial and error process of reproducing the old, legendary Damascus steel. Noone has succeeded yet. Basically because we don't know the exact ingredients and techniques the old Persians were using.
The Lionsteel blade in the first picture is made of Swedish powder steel damascus. It is a stainless steel, unlike most damascus steels.
The Boker Magnum Damascus Cuisine in the second pic is made of cheaper Chinese damascus. It's of a good quality though.
The MCusta in the second pic is top notch, entirely made out of damascus.
The Hartkopf in the third pic is a traditional damascus made of steel coming from the G3 Sturmgewehr (assault rifle).
The Fox in the third pic is made of Oreste Frati damascus, the Hartkopf in the fourth is a rose pattern by Markus Balbach.

This MCusta blade is made of three different steels. The knife has a core of VG-10, the outer damascus layers contain two 420-based steels, one of them having a relatively high nickel content. This technique, with a hard steel core and softer outer layers, is called San Mai. (The outer layers needn't be damascus.)

It is a misconception that two different steels are needed to produce damascus. Starting with any steel, the process of folding and hammering, and optionally stamping patterns, is done to strengthen the structure of the steel. This was known in ancient Persia and 18th century Japan. The steel wins in toughness and will have a better edge (ceteris paribus).
It is not very difficult to make your own. If you know how to make a knife out of a file, then the difficult part is cared for. Creating a block of damascus steel out of your file is a lot of work but needs only basic tools. You won't see the pattern until you etch the blade with acid though.

No doubt it looks pretty but I don't really buy the idea that it makes the steel better. No doubt back in the days working with impure ores and crude forges it made a difference. In modern day I believe a laminated steel will outperform it any day since it allows you to have the special properties of your different steels right where you want them and not just intermingled at random.

Not entirely true. Each separate layer of your laminate may be damascened to strengthen it beyond its current state. Proper damascening changes the steel's structure at a microscopic level, making it tougher.
It is the combination of folding and hammering that make the damascus. The etching is only for show.

To each his own. You could polish a damascus blade to remove the patterns and still have a high quality blade. Most Japanese katanas are damascened but not etched. (The hamon line on a katana is not produced by etching).
You shouldn't mix up the technique of creating damascus steel and the looks created by etching the blade.

This one's on my wish list. Not only does it have a damascus blade, the bolster is made of a mix of softer metals. A Japanese technique called mokume gane.

Gorgeous knives fellas  :salute:

I dont have any Damacus blades but I'd love to get one at some point.  They look gorgeous to my eyes and whether they are up to the standards of high performance steels I'll leave that to those with much more knowledge than myself.  I've always felt the etching on th blade is high art as well.  Such a nice added treat to have those patterns on a folder just because you can.
