Leatherman needed
on: December 09, 2016, 07:19:23 PM
Hi everyone I am a bit of a tool fanatic and have a few multitools, have the skeletool and a victorinox climber and a sog and gerber etc but I love the leatherman designs and they are for more heavy work , I am a mechanic by trade and want a tool for work and home

I don't think there is one with everything I want but bet everyone says that haha

Want a bit holder for sure already have the leatherman bits, I want a decent blade and pliyers I really wanted the changeable wire cutters as wil get used at work but don't think any I like have them

I don't want a huge tool like the surge preferably something wave sized or charge tti I love the look of these 2 but do any have changeable wire cutters

Thanks dean

Welcome aboard Dean

The Rebar has the replaceable cutters you are looking for, and there is a Leatherman bit adaptor available seperately which sits on the Phillips and lets you use the bits

Victorinox Spirit is always the answer, and just because they are pretty doesn't mean they can't take a beating :D

Nah... what you want is a Re-Charge / Re-Wave, a Charge/Wave with a Rebar head. There are several options on how to get one.
Easiest but expensive, would be get one from TTC

Alternatively, you can do it yourself, it is really not that hard, me (IT guy) did manage. Now Rebar heads are not that easy to come by, my best bet would be to PM loki-mobile.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Hi and thanks guys, I am from UK I forgot to add and I have also been hanging around here for ages keep looking at all the awesome tools, I seriously have a problem always buying tools at work and home and they just sit in drawer half the time but want a multitool to use, the last ones look to nice to use but that's what they are for 😂, sorry to be picky but don't like the look of the square rebar I love the wave and the charge tti so think going to have to pass on changeable heads, unless someone knows of bringing them out with them on ? So going to have to look at reviews on the charge tti as just found that and it's another good looking tool packed with cool tools, much more expensive though, the wave is excellent and already watched loads on wave

What's your opinions on wave vs charge tti ?

The change between TTI, ALX etc is namely to be found in the handle materials.
TTI: titanium
AL & ALX: alox
Between AL & ALX is a small tool configuration difference.

The wave is basicaly a no-nonsense version of a TTI, without belt cutter.

Now, in a pinch, wouldn't you cut your/someone elses seatbelt with the regular serrated blade?
The point ain't THAT sharp.
Above all, under stress chances are you won't be able to aim the seatbelt cutter over the seatbelt.
Better to survive with a cut then to die.

My advice: try looking for a decent second hand wave. I found some for €35 over here.

If you'd like to level it up after some time, go for a TTI.

The Wave is a more then decent tool for the money. And there is a reason it's one of Leatherman's most sold tools...

Engraving lasts as long as your tool ;)

It makes for a wonderfull present, but you'll have to hurry...

It etches a darkened text/logo on the tool.

I've seen some abused tools that still had their laser etch perfectly readable.

It's one of the nicest ways of etching in my oppinion.
Rest asured, it'll last.

Keep in mind though, if you order a laser etched tool online, you position the etching correctly.

Because some sites not only let you choose the engraving, but also the location of the etching (blade or handle)

Sometimes you can even virtualy position your etching on the product to choose where it'll be etched.
In this case you have to make sure you won't etch over any other brand/type markings on the tool.

Wave is a good tool to go. I have been using both Wave and TTi at work. TTi is better if you have small hands, because Wave opens wider. Other than that Wave is a fantastic beater and best MT for the money.
Leatherman:
Charge TTi, AL, Squirt PS4, Surge, Juice XE6, CS4, S2, ST300, Crunch, OHT, MUT, Rebar, Brewzer, Signal, Raptor, Tool Adapter, Croc, Wave, Style CS, Freestyle, Skeletool RX, Micra, Wingman
SOG:
PPP, PowerLock, SwitchPlier 2.0, Paratool, PowerAssist, Reactor, CrossCut, PowerPlay
Gerber:
FliK, MP600 ProScout, MP600 blunt, Dime, MP-1, Diesel, MP400
Bahco:
MTT151, MTT051, MTT121
Knives:
Spyderco PM2, Tatanka, Bug, ZT 0452CF, CS Recon1XL, Benchmade 940-1 and 482
SAKs:
Too many to list here...

Personal prefference.

However, if you ever damage the blade, you can have it replaced, but you'll lose the etching.
The handle takes a lot less beating and should last you forever...

-> I <- Would pick the handles.

That way you can enjoy it, and the memories behind it, without having a sharp edge out too!
