Noa Isumi's Discontinued Badge Thread
on: December 13, 2016, 01:41:41 PM
Day 1 6:44a local
Here we go again another 30day challenge. Lets start off by introducing you to the tools. Seeing as people have been switching out mutiple tools for some challenges, I chose two discontinued tools to feature.
And the contestants are....early70's Wenger Monarch and a 3/4 1999 stamped LM SuperTool.
These pretty well match thier modern counterparts; the Victorinox Champion Plus and LM ST300 that I used for my Super and Stack challenges.

So lets get this started with new and old side by side.

The original rules were that you could switch out whenever you wanted, as long as they were discontinued. I think those two can tackle just about anything. Good luck, have fun!
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

I took down some floating shelves and didnt want the brackets lost. So they get tied together with everyone's favorite classic cordage, jute.

Day 4 friday
Can opener comparison
The LM hasnt changed much, even the wire stripper is there. Like modern Wengers it is sharpend on the inside curve of the blade. The direction of the cut is pulling towards the operator, or the can rotates anti-clockwise if  user is right handed.

The Monarch on the other hand uses an odd chisel type that was discontinued in 1975. This was also a key item to extablishing a date for this knife.
To use it you punch it straight down, then rock up catching the notch on the rim of the can and lifting the blade through the lid from the inside. This is pretty much the opposite of every other SAK can opener as it cuts from the inside outward. The direction of the cut is away from the operator, or can rotation is clockwise if user is right handed. This is the same rotation as with the Victorinox can opener, however the Vic cuts from the outside in. The Monarch is also prone to folding when rocking up and forward for the next cut.

Day5
Fire!
Someone here used my entire box of Dimond strik-a-fire to not get the fireplace going the other day. This means I get to build a fire the right way instead of cheating.
The LM saw works great at combing out some jute.
And the chopper I am cutting kindling chips with is an Araniyk Etoh

Well I've done 2-30day challanges back to back before so its not such a big deal to reset my day count and keep going. If It had been 20days instead of 5 I'd probably be so  that I wouldn't. But this is recoverable.

And dont ask how that  got in the begining of my previous post.
Sometimes my phone's touch screen mis-reads  :crash: and tosses in a random

Dont worry its been a long day so I feel like talking in  :twak:
I promise I will be back to normal in the morning...mabey

Day3 wed
Working on an old Coleman 502 stove. The pump was shot so that got replaced. The hook remover fork at the front of the fish scaler worked for prying the retaining washer off. The clip that holds the whole thing in however is a pain, needing both pried with a screwdriver and pulled with pliers.

Unfortunetly there seems to be a blockage somewhere at the bottom past the screw valve that is preventing it from pressurizing. The air pressure builds in the pump making the last inch of the stroke impossible but doesn't go into tank. It feels like the screw valve is closed, but it isnt.
O well its not like I have used the thing in years, I just thought it would be good to get it fixed.

Tools pictured
Monarch, ST300, 12ga brush to clean up pump cylinder.

Am not sure what SAKs and a brazilian-style Brigadeiro chocolate dessert have to do with each other but here they are together for my pic anyway so now you know how I spent my morning

The recipe for Brigadeiros is simple
1 tbsp butter real butter
 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
 1 can sweetened condensed milk

combine all the ingredients in a saucepan or skillet and heat them up on a low temperature, sturring constantly till it thickens up. The consistency you're looking for it thick enough that it doesn't spread under its own weight when you pull it up on one side or in the middle of the pan or roughly about that of peanut butter or tub frosting from the store. This should take about 10 to 15 minutes to get to this point, remember to stir constantly or it will burn, so no stepping away even for an instant
Then you gotta let cool enough to be able to handle. This stuff will be hot and sticky. If you try and roll it into balls now it will burn the skin off your hands.
To roll grease your hands with the shortening butter or oil
Dip out bites, roll into balls and dredge in whatever toppings you choose. The ones pictured have powder sugar,  sprinkle, coconut, and crushed oreo cookies.

Serve right away or chill to store
Pictured is a double batch

The best description of the final product I have is a fudge flavored soft caramel

Day 5 friday
Today we get a side by side comparison fan of the '99ST and the ST300
The two retired items I wish the ST300 had is the small screwdriver and the old lanyard ring seems to be a better setup. I would worry that putting the ring at the pliers would change screw tension and hinder bali-flipping the tool open though.

Day 8
Tale of the traveler.
Yes, the one in the Nativity pics.

This traveler was listed as 'unknown sak in very good condition with origonal package and papers' or some such. The pics were lousy but it was cheap and I felt like the gamble was fun. After all it was essentially a grab bag the listing was soo bad.
Well the seller and I have very different opinions on condition and whether 'original packaging' needs to be the same brand.
What I recieved was a Vic SwissChamp box and paper with a neglected  Wenger Traveler in it. The scales were scared, logo almost worn off, the blades frozen shut with a mix of gunk and corosion, and the scissors falling apart.

So after much cleaning and a bit of work to tighten and re-set the hollow rivet/screw on the scissors it turnd out ok.

So todays pics are the ST tightening up that screw and a fan with a Vic Climber for comparison.

There are no tweezer/toothpick nor a hook on the Traveler. In normal Wenger fashion the Traveler has a nail file instead of the small blade that is standard for Victorinox. Aside from these minor diffrences these two are comparable models.
