As a collector do you buy when not in box? Or do you have a collection idiosyncrasy? Just curious.
CS, is this a Huntsman possibly? I ask because the eBay seller called it an Artisan....so I just want to be sure.

Just curious.I actually kind of avoid the boxes to an extent because they tend to sell for 2x what the knife itself would. And at least 10% of the time it's the wrong box! I do have a bunch of old boxes, but since my priority is the knife I always enjoy finding an old knife without the box since I know it'll go a lot cheaper. That looks like one of Gigahertz's auctions. If he says its an Artisan, it's definitely an Artisan.
Thank you JB for your input, those are some valid points about boxes that I had not considered. The Artisan is from an eBay seller named "femtohz"...not sure if it's the person to which you're referring.

no, already sold.
Quote from: ulli on December 29, 2016, 03:40:07 PMno, already sold. Probably the wrong time to start collecting SAKs...prices are sure high (at least to me), right when I want to treat myself.

Bringing this topic back to the top since I realize that I do buy SAKs and hope for a boxed version later. In some cases though, it seems a boxed version won't ever come along, so I am making peace with that fact. These non-boxed SAKs have helped me move forward with SAK enjoyment sans box (though I still prefer a box when available).(Image removed from quote.)
Boxes are nice and awl but those beauties don't NEED one.
I like my SAKs to have original boxes...just a little quirk of mine. But lately I've purchased a couple of knives because I liked them and/or in one case it is somewhat rare, and it didn't come with a box.I'm thinking I will buy the rare one if it doesn't have a box and then hope for a mint/boxed one to show at some later time.As a collector do you buy when not in box?
Great find FB! Ideally it is nice to get the original box, but if it is a hard to find SAK I would grab it when I see it, otherwise I may never find another one.
Out of curiousity:What does a SAK with exposed rivets and bail go for in good condition these days?
Auwch...Chances of me seeing one in person dropped to an extremely low level now... :-/$15 sounds like a plan though
