As a collector do you buy when not in box?  Or do you have a collection idiosyncrasy?  Just curious.

I actually kind of avoid the boxes to an extent because they tend to sell for 2x what the knife itself would. And at least 10% of the time it's the wrong box! I do have a bunch of old boxes, but since my priority is the knife I always enjoy finding an old knife without the box since I know it'll go a lot cheaper.

CS, is this a Huntsman possibly?  I ask because the eBay seller called it an Artisan....so I just want to be sure.

That looks like one of Gigahertz's auctions. If he says its an Artisan, it's definitely an Artisan.

Thank you JB for your input, those are some valid points about boxes that I had not considered.
The Artisan is from an eBay seller named "femtohz"...not sure if it's the person to which you're referring.

Yep, that's his eBay handle. Same unit of frequency, different SI prefix. He was a pretty active member here that went by GigaHz, though not sure if he still posts very much. Point is that he is (or at least was) a collector so pretty knowledgeable about SAKs. Not the typical "I found this knife in my dad's closet and I think SmartKnives called it xxxxx" type eBay seller that will sell you a $100 Modeler and you get it and they just never opened the saw and fish scaler and you really have a $20 Champion.

Probably the wrong time to start collecting SAKs...prices are sure high (at least to me), right when I want to treat myself.

I buy whatever I like.  Many I've bought have advertising I liked the looks of.  I've got a brand new, boxed with papers 1980s (awl without lacing hole) 84mm Tinker for Caterpillar, which only cost me $15.  The logo is inlaid.  I'd like to find another for carry exactly like it, but haven't seen another.

I do it both ways--if I find a beater, I just buy it and carry it. If I find a nice one, I put it away and wait for another to come along that's used and carried.

BTW IMHO an original box is nice to have, but it's the knife that's the important bit, I would have had to pass up on this otherwise, as the box was not original (the seller clearly said this, so I was aware):

Good call, the box comes secondary, just nice to have when possible.  Such a beauty you posted there!

Although I do have this in transit to me currently, both box and contents...

Still looking for a nib Elsener 1891 original issue.
 :D

Oh, and imho, a box without the original pricetag is absolutely worthless ;-)

Indeed, it's pretty flawless! Was stuck with customs (was sent from the USA) over the Christmas/New Year break, otherwise I would have got it sooner. There's some more pics of it in the OC Club+ thread

Bringing this topic back to the top since I realize that I do buy SAKs and hope for a boxed version later.
In some cases though, it seems a boxed version won't ever come along, so I am making peace with that fact.
These non-boxed SAKs have helped me move forward with SAK enjoyment sans box (though I still prefer a box when available).

Boxes are nice and awl but those beauties don't NEED one.    I hope they are on display in your casa.   :tu:

I like my SAKs to have original boxes...just a little quirk of mine. :ahhh
But lately I've purchased a couple of knives because I liked them and/or in one case it is somewhat rare, and it didn't come with a box.

I'm thinking I will buy the rare one if it doesn't have a box and then hope for a mint/boxed one to show at some later time.
As a collector do you buy when not in box?
Great find FB!   :like: :tu: :tu:
Ideally it is nice to get the original box, but if it is a hard to find SAK I would grab it when I see it, otherwise I may never find another one.

I'd buy one of those SAKs (if the price is from this world) if I got the chance.
They never pop up here though! So box or no box wouldn't be a deal breaker to me.
However, my Astronaut and horn scaled Golfer came with box and I REALY like that extra feature. :dd:

Out of curiousity:
What does a SAK with exposed rivets and bail go for in good condition these days?

I have come to that same conclusion, to get it when I see it.  I am realizing that I am not finding some of them in their original boxes and it will likely get more difficult.

The last one I wanted went over $300, so I didn't win the bid as I didn't want to pay that much with no box.
The most I ever paid mint in box, exposed rivets was $412 and the least I paid without box, but it has exposed rivets was $15 (needed scissor screw and one side of scissors), so prices are all over the place.
One recently sold for $112 thereabouts, but I think it had a few issues.

Chances of me seeing one in person dropped to an extremely low level now... :-/

$15 sounds like a plan though

Here is one with issues that closes in 2 hours, no bail though.  I am not a bidder on it, just watching it:

Nice piece!

I'm in Europe though, so finding a seller that ships here is one thing.
Shipping costs is another...
