Sadly very true, but there are still some knifemakers/companies up that way, but there still churning out very dated tool's, and just how far can ignorance/nostalgia take you

What's worse is I bought a knife from a small Sheffield maker last year and was quite horrified by the lack of care in the finish

That's the problem, there churned out so quickly that the quality has really fallen by the wayside

Sheffield isn't a byword of quality anymore

I'm told there are nice areas to the city.  I just wasn't allowed into them

I spent three months there living out of a room in which the condensation ran down the walls and froze solid every night, bad days. Long time ago thank goodness.
