Poncho needs a Spyderco- please help!
on: December 31, 2016, 03:05:40 PM
Poncho has expressed a desire to get a Spyderco knife but isn't sure what one to get.  He says he wants a serrated blade on it.  I suggested the quintessential Spyderco models- the Police, the Endura or the Delica, but as there are much more knowledgeable Spyderco collectors here than me I thought we should get some other opinions as well!

So come on folks, let's spend some of Poncho's money by suggesting some Spyderco models that the Banana Man absolutely must have:D

Thanks Boss :dd: :D

I would like a fully serrated blade with a regular sized blade  Not to big of a blade but I don't want a small blade either and pics would very likely help me  :like:

First, have you checked out the ?

What will you be using the serrated edge for?
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Megan has suggested the Salt, which I agree, is a very nice knife.

I still prefer the Police model, but then it is a bit on the large side.  Still, it is perhaps as elegant as a folding knife can be.

The Q is also a nice knife, but it is a bit small, and long discontinued.  It might be difficult to locate and/or expensive.

Another of my favorites is the Native, but I don't have a pic handy of that one, sorry.  :D

It is just, that with PE I prefer a slightly curved edge, but with serrations I prefer it straight. But lots of people seem to like the hawkbill shape with serration.

OK I gotcha :tu: I have used both and I guess it has been so long since I used a curved blade with serrations that I had forgotten

You want the full serrated Pacific Salt then. Its blade is 3.8". The salt 1 is 3". I have owned both in multiple blade/scale varieties as well as other salt models. Any of the knives mentioned will serve you well, but go with the Pacific Salt if you want a blade closer to 4".

Poncho, after so much time you should know my answer
Pacific Salt for a nearly 4 inch blade
Salt I for a 3 incher.

Both rustproof, very tough, durable, lightweight, easy to carry, friendly colour, cut like the Dickens, easy to maintain (even in the dishwasher for cleaning), affordable, won't chip or dent under abuse, they'll cut for loooong time.

Just DO IT

My vote goes to either the Native or Delica.  I would like to try the H1 steel at some point but size wise I really enjoy the Delica and Native.  Size wise they are exceptional I do find the Delica a better cutting experience.  Not sure I can explain other than to say the shapes between the two for me lean me towards the Delica for every day use.

Sorry no pictures.  I'm still having issues.

You may need to buy six or seven to really get an idea of what you like.  :D

Perhaps you should make it an even dozen, just to be on the safe side!

Salt 1 or Dragonfly H1, depending on the size of your hand.

The Delica will give you a 3 inch blade and the Endura will give you about a 3 3/4 inch blade.

The Native is similar blade length to the Delica but is a fatter blade.

I love that broad blade.  It is the opposite of the Police model in almost every way, but they are absolutely my two most favorite Spyderco models.

I've had a love-hate relationship with the Ladybug Salt Hawkbill, a tiny knife with the propensity to cut through about anything. At around half an ounce, I often forget the darn thing's in my pockets.  At present, I myself am torn between the Rescue Jr. (currently called the Rescue 79mm), and the soon-to be released, slightly smaller Manbug Salt.  But, I personally am going to try a steel other than H-1.

I also recommend the Police.

Don't rule out the Byrds, either.   They're a great knife for the money.   I use a Cara Cara Rescue 2 as a knife for cutting brush, rope, and other heavy materials that a plain edge knife struggles on. Despite being one of my bigger folders, it carries like nothing.

Well I just pulled the trigger on a Gen 1 Endura Clipit  Got a good deal on it and it looks like what I expect a Spyderco to look like :D I am sure I will get another one or two later on and will definitely look for a Pacific Salt as they are very similar to the Endura :like: Thanks all for taking the time to help me out and I am still open to more suggestions   :D

Good choice on the Endura!

If I recall correctly that was the knife that put Spyderco on the map.

That is why the Salt is the shape it is- Spyderco just took their best design and changed the steel.

If you get the chance, try to handle the Police Model.  It feels a bit like a sword but it is sooooo nice.

It's not just my favorite Spyderco, it is probably my absolute favorite folder.

Man, you don't know what you are asking. Spydercos are like potato chips. You can't stop with one. I would suggest to go with the classics like the Delica or Endura. If you don't mind me living vicariously through you I would say get a PM 2 or 3 http://knifenews.com/spyderco-para-3/

Compression locks are the bomb. Manix 2 are also good but oversize for an urban dweller would be my opinion. But to each his own and rock what you want, you know?

if you want to go exclusive try to get your hands on any sprint runs or exclusives, though you sacrifice a bit on ease of sharpening if you go blade steel exotic. But 😎.

Good luck with that, please post pics for your financially challenged brethren like myself.

In very basic words;

Worker put Spyderco in the market
Delica and Endura made them famous and widely known, flagship models they became
Military and Paramilitary put them on the top of the "working man's" knife realm
PM2 and Manix 2 reassured their dominance in the ergonomics and lock mechanisms world
Ladybug, Manbug and Dragonfly 2 put them into the "mini" category as true hits
Police, Ulize and Civilian showed the world they can innovate, improve and explore in all ways
Lum Tanto, Starmate, Salt, Yojimbo, Domino, Harpy, Ayoob, and all their collabs just threw them at the peak of variety, diversity and improvement

and that is only for folding knives, then all the fixed blades are there!

Just my view on it, and two cents on Spydies and their classics    :salute:
