Robertson Question
on: December 01, 2017, 02:06:58 PM
Were Roberston drivers equipped primarily on SOG MTs intended for the Canadian market? It's not something I see in the US often.

Not sure. I think they just put them on there tools just to put them on there. I wish the Roberson head screws would become more popular here. Way better than the slotted heads and Phillips.

We used Robertson screws a few years ago since we, as an alarm company, need to use a "non-frequent" head type.
We now use a special Torx head, but I liked the Robertsons better.
It was like they were glued to the bit drivers and Robertson screwdrivers!

Nope.  You always had to buy the Robertson bit separately and replace something to have it.

Over here, 99% of the time, you only ever see Robertson screws on aluminium constructions like sliding door frames and windows. Almost always #1, too.

Not sure why they aren't used more? I much prefer them over Philips and Pozidrive, the latter being your standard wood screw. Are hex screws that much better?

They've become popular in the electrical industry for panel cover, breakers, devices, they're usually no. 2, and also have a slot for a flathead.
Come to think of it, I think they're actually just trying to make the screws work with whatever you have. They accept the square, flat, and partially Phillips.

I just wish Phillips would go away. Honestly, just about anything is better.

Def, I think you are wrong there. I'm pretty certain that the early PowerPliers came with the Robbie standard.

Trades here use square drives a lot. I wouldn't mind one for the switch plier 2.

Yep! My powerplier has a Phillips and Robertson  driver from the factory.
I've got one Bear Jaws that came with a Robertson, but I am sure it was a custom order MT.
But, after the PowerPlier, you absolutely had to order and install a Robertson on SOGs.

I do remember seeing pics of a SOG with a built-in Robertson bit and thinking it was odd but no idea which one it was.

AFAIK they came as standard configuration,
2 of my 3 SOG PowerPliers had them and I quite never knew what to do with them, because there's not a single Robertson screwdriver in my country, at least not that I've ever encountered...

I read an article years ago about a Toronto based artist who had hired a local company to ship pieces of his work across to Europe for a gallery show he was doing.... and when everything arrived they found out there was no way to disassemble the crates and frames they had been shipped in because everything had been built with Robertson screws.

Here's the article:
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/screwed/article1126817/

And another article that is a good read about Robertson screws if anyone is interested.

The thread has mystified me since its inception since I haven't yet had time to google Robertson. Thanks for the link to the article Grant :tu:
Now I also know the origin of this strange LM bit called R1/R2 that I'd never seen a screw for, at least on this side of the pond. They'd never attracted my attention in Canada either..

It wouldn't be newsworthy if anyone had been sensible....

For the record, I like Robertson screws, but they can be very unforgiving.  If you don't have the right size then you are just as likely to round out the screw or the screwdriver as you are to get the screw out.

Honestly I believe the best screw to have right now is the Torx, which suffers from needing the correct size as well, but provides a lot more surface area to distribute the torque so there's less chance of stripping.  Still, when the Robertson was developed in the early 1900's, there wasn't an option to manufacture things like Torx on a large scale, and the Robertson was considered to be a very advanced design.

If you have the right size Robertson though, it is extremely solid feeling.

Solid feeling?

The screwdriver stays attached while you hold the screw!
It's almost magic! :ahhh :D
