Where do you draw minimalist line?
on: February 23, 2017, 10:34:45 AM
So what SAKs you think are minimalist and what are not?
I think Spartan/Tinkers are definetly NOT minimalist at all. They have a lot of tools and are pretty basic swiss pocket knives all round.

I'd consider Recruit/Cadet be borderline minimalist as they have only few tools beside the knife, so yeah, Recruit for me is minimalist I guess. Few drivers an extra blade and few openers with those and I could call it kinda minimalist.

Sure this is just everyones opinion, not trying to turn anyones head here. :)

Standard/Tinker is a REAL SAK, not for minimalists only, and that is the reason they are too large for my pockets. :D

Whats your opinion?

I feel like my Wenger SI is minimalist.  One blade, one awl, one can opener, one bottle opener, one flat head screwdriver and finally one small flat head blade good for Phillip screws.

No tools on bottom. There are more minimal, but I feel the SI (and Vic Pioneer) are all that you really need to carry.

My 2 cents worth...

Indeed, that's on the frontier. Do you carry it very often?

I carry it every single day. It's very comfortable to carry.  :tu:

And no bulges that may frown eyebrows.

But it's also very easy to forget it's there in your pocket. Can't count the times it ended up in the washing machine because I forgot to take it out of my pants. On the plus side of that, I was lucky enough to never have it confiscated at the airport  :ahhh

I consider a SAK as minimalist if it has 2 layers...

But then again I consider the minichamp as my minimal carry because of its small size... Confusing? Hahaha

I keep a swisscard nailcare in my wallet, if I'm not carrying the wallet then a rambler comes with.

I need a knife, scissors, toothpick, tweezers and bottle opener on a regular basis.
I like to have a small blade, pokey thing and a couple of screwdrivers handy as well.
A Climber or Super Tinker would cover all of these and 95% of my day to day 'EDC' uses, and allow me to only carry a single item, along with a light.  But I don't own a Super Tinker or a Climber.

Funny you should say that - I'm in the same boat. I have every variant of Fieldmaster/Huntsman/Spartan/Mountaineer/Craftsman as well as super-skinny Waiters and Bantams, but I never got round to buying a Super Tinker which I have always wanted. (I know why - I have the Fisherman, which is a Super Tinker pius the back scratcher. Every time I'm about to hit the buy button, I remember this and back out...)

I too think of the Spartan as being minimalist, even though there are several degrees of minimal beyond it. I wish Victorinox made a jumbo Bantam - a 111mm blade with a combo tool facing it would really do the trick for me. With a pocket clip... but I know that is too much to hope for.

I guess I am not cut out to be a minimalist since I do look at 2 layers as a minimal carry.  I carried the classic SD on my keychain for decades until I got a MiniChamp II...now that is the minimum I want to carry on the keychain.  Oh well...  :)

Keychain tools are minimal... then there's the habit of carrying a SAK... then add an MT on top of that...

3 layers (as in the Yeoman) is the max I consider for pocket carry... And of course a 4.5 layered Alox (still thinner than the Yeoman)...

I had my answer ready based on my assumptions where this thread would be about.
So that answer was wrong  :D

The tool I use the most is the large blade. So a Solo would be absolutely minimalist.
But you can hardly call a Solo a multitool.
So a Compact would be the minimalist-standard for me. A ton of functionality in a very compact knife.

My minimalist carry is a Handyman with a Photon Freedom light attached. I wouldn't leave home with less.

I like your version of minimalist better!  I could carry my Explorer and still be a minimalist.  I could carry my Explorer in one pocket and put my CT-29 or one of my three CT-34s in the other pocket.  Cool!  :)

Pretty much the same for me.
If my personal 'minimalist' knife would only have the functions I need on a daily basis, I'd end up with a Deluxe Tinker.

Luckily I don't mind my knives being bulky or heavy.
I carried a Swisstool in my trouser pockets for almost 2 years and didn't even notice it being there. The heavy one, that looks like two steel bars slapped together, not the girly one... (Just messing with you... :D)
I would never carry a knife with fewer than 3 layers, since I find thinner knives uncomfortable to hold (I've got fairly big hands.)

I think setting and tool needs, and maybe age are the building blocks of perspective needed to answer your question.

Years ago,  I was happy with a Tinker.  Now,  (don't laugh), my most common needs include scissors for fingernails,  and beard trimming,  nail file,  tooth pick (theirs the age thing coming in), and tweezers (there's the age thing), and knife.  The mag glass is necessary when shopping to read labels (dang,  i miss my 40s).
So, during the week, I'm driving a desk,  and moving other people's money around.  To me, a Classic SD is much more "robust" then an Alox Farmer would be. I really want to try an Alox,  but they would have to be a supplement to a Celidor knife.
The Plus scales with the pen are even better,  and have saved me many times when having to quickly transpose music to a different key,  moments before a song starts (musician on the side).

So,  a Classic SD is sufficient during the work week.  A Cadet would, or my Bantam,  or Classic 62 are minimalistic to me, but helpful on the weekends.

I thought about this approach,  but do like having the toothpick available on the keychain or dangler while in driving.  For me,  the wallet would be for back up only.

I'll go ahead and say minimalist has a different meaning here (or other knife/tool/EDC enthusiast sites) than in the rest of the world.  For many, many people, minimalist means they just need their iphone

I look at minimalist as having less than would be convenient.  So the tools that make my day to day convenient are knife, scissors, drivers, openers, (sometimes pliers, but we'll leave those out for now).  So anything that doesn't include those falls into minimalist for me.  That usually means 2 layer SAKs, or the more traditional, standard configurations.  Spartan, Tinker, Solder/Pioneer, Cadet, Bantam, all fall into minimalist for me.

any of the keychain SAKs, the Ambassador and Executive, Bantam and Waiter are the SAKs I own that I'd consider minimalist carry
the Farmer is an important step-up for me and belongs to the next class, along with my Tinker, Spartan, Climber and Mountaineer/Explorer, those I consider standard carry
the final class for me would be my Champion, Handyman and Swisschamp, in what I'd consider gadget freak carry
My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

SAKs: Bantam, Executive, Ambassador, Minichamp, Classic Alox, Champion, Farmer, Explorer, Swisschamp, Golf Tool, Wenger Champ, EVO 52, Pocket Tool Chest
