I would consider the minimalist sak as a Classic, Rambler or something that size with just a few tools or a bigger sak with just two layers.  To me I carry the Explorer because I like the tool set and have used most of them quite often but besides a few exceptions I probably could really get by with a Rambler.  If I had one or find one I may try a 30 day challenge some time!  :)

Pioneer or cadet, a blade with a few toys, anything less and I'd rather have a simple knife, at least they are going to be more thick and heavy duty if needed..

I'm coming from the Ronald Schröder school of minimalism:

A SAK is minimalistic if it has only the size and tools that the user really needs.

I will say I love finding new and unique ways of using my SAKs. For instance,  I just realized that the bottle opener can tighten the nuts on my guitar strap really well. One less reason to carry heavy pliers. The sharp edge on the van opener can be used as a knife,  and to scrape fingernails shorter.

I personally like a bulkier SAK since I enjoy carrying a belt pouch. I've really come to enjoy my 4 layer Wenger, fits my hand perfectly.

Other than that, a good primary knife, a flashlight and a lighter round things out. Simple and ezpz.

I think the most minimalist is compact, because there is a combo tool there, it was for the 2 layers. for one layer may waiter is the choice

Minimalistic to me has to be always a Tinker/Spartan (91/84mm). For me justifying carrying a sak it's got to have at least 2 layers to feel comfortable with blades to cut things, the bottle/can openers for minimum reliable screwdrivers, and the awl, so a Compact will always be out of the picture for me. For scissors any of the blades can do about the same job, even if not as easily sometimes. I carry the classic on the keychain for scissors anyway and because it looks cool as a keychain  :D
The Philips/Corkscrew issue doesn't really bother me as much as it used to. I just like the back Philips because it looks slimmer than the corkscrew, but I hardly ever use it for more than very light torque screwing (messed up my first super tinker screwing too hard  :() as for Philips and others I use a couple of modified bits I carry with me and use it with the bottle opener, so I always have an inline "everything" screwdriver wise.
But by this I mean emergency screwdriving, for when I have nothing else available. I always use proper tools if I have them available.

It always vary from user to user and specific needs, for some minimalistic can be a Handyman for example

EDIT: as far as what i consider bare essentials, here's what i usually carry 90% of the time (the other 10% i carry other sak's instead of the tinker):  :D

indeed may be ideally suited to activities we hardly found in one Sak. certainly will collaborate some saks, two or three maybe. if they want to get a sack suit us. in our forum, we call sak 100% not just 90% hahaha. modding is the only way to get the most simple ideal sak

I have one SAK 100% of myself. conform my activities. we take the term of bianco, and I called Yeoman Cutmaster Hahaha

I consider my Swisschamp to be minimalist as well, because it beats having to tote my toolbox around all day just in case I might need something from it...
