Butchering an old Champion
on: February 23, 2017, 07:34:50 PM
I got a Champion off ebay a while back, and I will most likely never use it - it's too chunky for me and I don't like the old metal file.
So I was thinking about wrecking it /ditching some of the layers to make something thinner.*

However, I noticed it's quite an old Champion with fluted corkscrew and metal-headed tweezers, no hook etc. And it's also in excellent, almost new condition. Is it ok to trash this or should I pass it on to someone more appreciative of its antique beauty? (Soon as I find my phone I'll take a picture of the SAK in question.)

*I am quite a master at dismantling SAKs, but considerably less talented when it comes to putting them back together again...

That's a classic old knife....I'd pass it and snag a newer one.

The problem is I got this pretty cheap - I don't think I'll find a better candidate for butchery any cheaper.
The pictures on ebay were terrible - just a fuzzy shot with all the blades closed so it was anybody's guess what was up for sale.
I agree, though - it doesn't feel right to murder this beauty...

(I found my phone! So here's some pics.)

I'd leave it be. What is it you had in mind to make?

I haven't decided yet... something along the lines of a Scientist/ Yeoman/ Yeoman with metal file (I'd get a newer one from a Mountaineer.)
Or maybe just a fishy Scientist - you know, cos I quite dig the fish scaler.
The main thing would be to ditch the saw. For some reason I can't abide these tiddly saws. They're just a waste of space on any SAK (until you get to 111mm when they suddenly become really useful.)

I would not take that one apart. I think you should sell it to someone else and you can make a little profit in the process and find another one to use for parts.
