Looks like some extremely fine craftsmanship. Are they very pricey?

Yes and yes. Well not super pricey for some people but I can't afford one like that.

It does lock, actually, it's a back lock, with the "button" all the way at the back (where you can see the spring sticking out). Most of Fontenille Pataud's knives lock, except the real original ones. They even have a one-hand-open Laguiole knives, like this:

(not my picture)

Also, yeah, they're quite expensive, but not (much) more than a Benchmade, for example, certainly here in Europe.

I stand corrected.  :salute:  I've only ever seen non locking ones. I think that makes me want one even more.  :)

Thanks chaps.  It's lovely - snicks open and closed and feels really well made.  It's smaller than it appears too, about the same size as a Pioneer.  Wickedly sharp edge to it, as expected.

These are my only 'other' knives aside from my SAK's. The little classic is always on my keyring of course.

From top down, Sardinian resplza made by S. Osai and son's, Pattada Sardinia. Northwoods stockman with 1095 blades. A Zuava, a style of knife from the northern Tuscany region of Italy. And of course, my ever present classic!

I found this cheap but good looking folder the other day. The liner has a Ti coating that gives it a subtle colour shift under light.

All China made knives are users.

My thought wasn't so much about price, but the safety concerns. Blade play, quality of the lock, so on.

Actually a not that bad knife considering price. Solid locking mechanism and no blade play. Quite the little looker also.

I am allways amazed that 99.99% of the world manages fine with cheap, no-name knives...  :D

Here is a site, worth a look for the more high end buyer:

http://www.williamhenry.com/knives.html

Word on the street is that these cut as good as they look (see their blade materials).
Some do remind me of dressed up CRKT knives..

Probably because most of the 99.99% of the world doesn't care about what kind of knife it is, as long as it gets the job done. And it's 'just a knife' so why spend a lot of money on it?

What you don't realize is, that like most fanatics, we only make up a very small percent of the user. Like car nuts, or stereo nuts, or techno nuts. Most people are happy with a Honda civic or Toyota Corolla because it gets them to work and back with no hassle. They don't need a Porsche or Ferrari, or even really want one. JUst like most people are happy with an off the shelf stereo from the store, instead of the hunt for the best components to put together. When you get past all the hype and happy horse hockey we build around them, a knife is just a piece of steel with a handle. Any 5 dollar serrated kitchen knife will process dinner, just as any Chinese pocket knife will cut that piece of rope, open a UPS box, or other mundane cutting job.

So they really don't care. We care because we're obsessed with the knife as a cult worship item. To the rest of the world, we're nuts.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

I agree. I always say that most people seem to be quite happy to show off and use their cheap multitools, and use them much harder than I would.

Most people carrying pocket knives, and using them daily; older people mainly, just describe them as sharp ("it is really sharp") rather than knowing or caring about what specific steel composition it has and what animal the scales come from.

of course, they know how to keep their knife sharp.

Fellow Nuts!
I obtained this nice looking folder which I know nothing about except taht there is LSZ and Rostfrei as a tang stamp.
Scales are wood, I think and the tool loadout is like the classic officers knife.

I put a Spartan in the pics for size reference.

Back tools are a little stubborn and are soaking in oil. The Bail is loose on one side. Shall I loose it completely or try to reaffix it?

Speaking of a cheap knife...but one that is well made. I found this at my Chrysler Dodge, Jeep dealer. They were selling them for 15 bucks.

The blade came nice and sharp out of the box. The whole knife is made of metal and had a nice weight to it. I also like the shape of that blade. Not bad for the money.
